Re: Hunter 33 sailing around Cape Horn
Yes but it is the accumulation of the different posts and useful information that matters far more than the start of the thread. The information does not date and is useful for future adventures. |

Re: Hydrovane Windvane Experieince?

Re: RYA Yachtmaster Fast Track
The best thing about doing hero to zero and I have never done it by the way would be the fact you dont have time to forget the prior lessons. I did competent crew to yacht master offshore in a year.... |

Re: Becoming an RYA skipper. Advice on qualifications please :)
The yacht master ocean is not just an oral exam. You have to do a qualifying passage and then present your charts with plots on and explain the working on the charts, Log book, passage plan, boat... |

Re: Certifications and Insurance
Do the RYA Day skipper theory and then practical. It wont teach you everything but it will teach you enough to start with and point out what you will need to know in the future. They are good... |

Re: Is an electric windlass a necessity when living on the hook solo?
Unfortunately age will enforce the electrical side of things. They are fairly reliable as it is only a simple electric motor. Fridges and freezers are the beginning of complexity. |

Re: Vessel upgrades
I have owned 2 boats. They had all the bells and whistles. One was completely repainted(steel). I suspect all up I spent no more than 20,000 aud in 15 years of ownership. Some people include their... |

Re: "Curious about circumnavigating/no experience"
The RYA courses are great. You can do them but you dont need to pass or do the exams. You will have learnt a lot that you wont forget. Some people are just not made for exams or need them. It wont... |

Re: Trisail track (or not)
They do slightly different things. One of the things a tri sail does is bring the centre of effort further aft so your boat will round up better. It also does not have to be connected to the boom... |

Re: Do you calibrate you depth sensor to water level or keel?
I just do it from the surface and know i run aground at 1.8. It means i can relate to all chart datums with no extra unnecessary calculations when tired. |

Re: How much cash to retire?
I have done it before and we had a happy little ship. Only canvas on boat was the spray dodger. You come across as a cheerful companion. |

Re: Heaving-to myths.
I think we discovered the music thing by accident. I did not add that we broke both chain plates for the port and starboard uppers. Not caused by the weather but my failure to spot 2 bad welds done... |

Re: Heaving-to myths.
The sea anchor never stops you but reduces your movement which is part sideways down to half a knot or so maybe one to 1.5. Sliding back cannot be discounted and it depends on the shape of the waves.... |

Re: Motion sickness
Avoid caffeine and take your pills about an hour before your first trip. By the second day you should not need the pills. By the way that only works for me, have no idea how others go. |

Re: Heaving-to myths.
In my humble opinion as the storm gets worse you will need the tri sail as it moves centre of effort aft helping you to point higher while hove to so as to present better to the waves. Less chance of... |
