3G Caribbean Internet.

Recall.
Hi guys, I've just realised I've spread some misinformation on here in the past regarding 3G coverage in the Caribbean. I had thought you just needed 2 digicel sims to cover Grenada to BVIs...

Re: Deep cycle and dual purpose in same bank

Our cat came with 4 exide duel 160Ah lead acid batteries. We couldn't source the same batteries so added 2 similar standard 160Ah lead acid batteries. So far so good after a couple of years constant...

Re: Catamaran shopping in S. Florida????

Lots of options there, mostly pretty inexpensive. Most of the boats run on 12V systems so it's just a matter of recharging house batteries. Cheapest option maybe a shore power cord that converts 110...

Re: Toilet paper and head cog

Not yet. It's up and running but will experiment with different antenna locations before attempting to run it up the mast I think.
Back to the poo...yes I agree bags of dunny paper are a pretty...

Re: Catamaran shopping in S. Florida????

Good luck. With the USD being strong against the EUR it might make sense to try buy in EUR. At least you can use those prices to compare. A lot of the Caribbean yachts for sale are European so the...

Re: Toilet paper and head cog

Yeah do a simple test of the different tp. Some will dissolve in 20 seconds in a bucket, others don't at all, like Kleenex tissues turn into a soggy ball. I think single ply is usually best.

Re: Catamaran shopping in S. Florida????

I'd probably jump on a plane and head to Martinique if you have the time.

Re: Buy or charter in prep for 2018 World ARC circumnavigation?

Really? 33K for the ARC. What do you get for that? Seems like a lot of coin to be told when and where you have to sail on a circumnavigation. Maybe it's worth looking at some of the alternative...

Re: Sailing and Diving Video 1160 Lite Catamaran

well done mate, very nice vid! A couple of questions. We dont have a genset either and considering refilling dive tanks. What is that compressor? Is there no 240V compressor that will run off the...

Re: Where (in the boat) did you install your watermaker?

we put our similar system in the starboard hull, partly to balance the batteries in port. pump and filters and through hull are below the floor at the foot of the stairs, easy to change filters and...

Re: Polars building

That might be overstating the performance a bit. I wouldn't rely on the log for too accurate data. It tends to change a bit depending on the tack. There's probably more pressure when the log is in...

Re: Polars building

5kt sog sounds a bit slow in 15 TWS, but 43twa is probably a bit high for the best VMG. 15tws is pretty much the sweet spot for the L400 upwind and we would only see 5kt STW in a pretty crappy sea...

Running a wire up the mast, tips and tricks?

Ok so I bought a groovy wifi antenna and 25m of cat6 cable to fit it. Has anyone run a wire up the mast, or down, and any advice on how to do it? One option would be fit it at the spreaders or even...

Re: Buying new in France or buying used in the Caribbean?

Bacchus, yes delivery quirks are pretty normal across the board with all boats. Sorting them out can be a bit of a pain, especially if you are on a restricted timeline. Ideally you want to allow...

Re: Favorite wind speed?

10-20 from any direction. Over that the boat noises tend to drown out the acoustic guitar sounds. No need for reefing or keeping an eye on the spinnaker and boat speeds usually 6-8kt. Sweet spot,...

Re: Lagoon 380 waste tank

the owners side tank is an optional extra at ordering stage. We ordered without and worked fine for us using the port dunny in marinas.

Re: 2016 Weather to the Azores

Phil I think it has a lot to do with waiting for the Azores High to settle in place which should be around about your departure time, fingers crossed. Once it settles we will have the Portuguese...

Re: 2016 Weather to the Azores

Thanks Nick. Great to read your synopsis. I've been noticing the fairly long range gribs to be quite accurate around the Caribbean and Atlantic. Much more so than the Med.

Re: Water speed sensor

Yours sounds similar to ours. I think I recalibrate by 20% across the board. Having accurate STW log is indispensable for determining current as well as TWS and TWA. It will never be prefect and...

Re: Would you put the batteries into the cockpit locker ?

We have 6x140 Ah batteries under the port berth. I guess the weight is around 150 kg for 840Ah. That's nowhere near enough to offset the weight balance, let alone sink the transoms inches more. The...

Re: Water speed sensor

The sensor is a paddle wheel log, located in front of the port keel. They clag up with marine growth every month so a swim and unclagging is the easiest fix if the water is warm enough
