Re: Relocating Battery Charger

Another hole in the boat and another steam table tray, the transom this time for engine and cooling air exhaust.

Re: Jost Van Dyke Customs Shakedown

If the skipper ignored the required clearing-in procedures and then whinges when caught out by the authorities it shows a sorry lack of philosophical development.

The correct attitude on his part...

Re: US Split-Phase to EU Heat Pump Not Working

One learns the advantages when there's contact with a faulty 110 volt lighting network 100' up an oil rig derrick.

Re: US Split-Phase to EU Heat Pump Not Working

Went and had a look at some schematics of the US system and found it fairly confusing but it appears that a street transformer provided with 220, or more, volts to the primary winding, and a centre...

Re: Dodger Quotation

Went through the same costing process with both my bimini and dodger covers replacements and after recovering from the terror of being bankrupted threw the whole mess away and rebuilt them both in...

Re: How many spare ropes are enough?

The only effective answer to your wife on the fecundity of ropes in the locker is a short reply along the lines of "Ropes are a bit like women's shoes, you can never have too many of them"

Re: Additional starter relay seizing the alternator

Being suspicious of the number of connectors between the cockpit instrument panel and the starter motor (which has a relay fitted) I wired in a push button, situated on the side of the engine box, in...

Re: Portable generator or not?

The $1,000 may be better spent on upgrading your main engine battery charging system. I cruise about seven months of the year and find that I fairly often need to motor a couple of hours to recharge...

Re: SSB Receiver recommendations

I've never measured what my Icom power draw is in receive only but since it and the portables are both transisterised I doubt there's much difference.

Re: SSB Receiver recommendations

I have a little Icom IC 78 which are available in Australia for about A$1500 which I use to listen to weather reports when in remote places to listen to weather reports on SSB HF. I have an auto...

Re: Earthing the inverter

I think these type plugs and sockets illustrated in Post #15 are why you should not use ordinary extension leads or caravan sockets for shore connections (Note the screw type retention collars) in...

Re: SSB Receiver recommendations

[QUOTE=barcoMeCasa;3882085]You're allowed more than one option....

SSB receivers can be handy as the power draw is very low & you can get lots of surface synoptics & 500mB charts free to...

Re: Moody 49 lost on bar at Bahia del Sol, El Salvador

The beginning of the third paragraph in the image in Jedi's post is a bit of a give away where it says "tidal current is strong".

My limited experience with bars under the influence of "tidal...

Re: SSB Receiver recommendations

I think that if I was crossing an ocean I'd go the whole hog and buy a proper HF transceiver or get and use a sat phone.

Re: Volvo MD2020 Flywheel Housing Opening

The "threads" you can see on the flywheel are the gear teeth the starter motor engages to crank the engine, it wont hurt to spray a bit of lubricant into the hole whilst the engines running...

Re: Earthing the inverter

Not certain but I think the 240 volts is the RMS value rather than a typo. The peak voltage is higher.

Re: Stabilized bed platform

Decades ago a monohull was built for the Melbourne to Osaka yacht race by carving the hull from a giant block of polyurethane and glassing it over. The internal fitout was achieved by carving a round...

Re: Re-power

My Kuboto V2203 cost about A$7,000 new and the transmission was A$2,500 about fifteen years ago. I marinisede and installed it myself. I specified the gearbox ratio to spin the prop faster...

Re: US Split-Phase to EU Heat Pump Not Working

Lot to ponder on there and I tend to the opinion (based on no more than intuition) that the simple graph tends to misrepresent the real situation.

Three phase power consists of three phases 120...

Re: Re-power

About 10 years ago I decided to re-engine my boat because the original engine, a Yanmar 3GM30, was to small for the boat. Easy peasy, I'll just wander over to the Yanmar dealer and pick up a 50 or so...

Re: US Split-Phase to EU Heat Pump Not Working

Hi Jedi,

Not sure about that diagram, looks to me that summing those two phases with the phase angles they have would give a zero resultant.

Re: 6 Volts from 12 Volt System!?!?

The series resistance from poor connections problem is overcome in industrial instrumentation services by using a 4-20 mA varying current transmission circuit instead of a varying voltage circuit....

Re: US Split-Phase to EU Heat Pump Not Working

I suspect it's not just the cycle rate which causes the problem.

My limited understanding of multi phase AC power is that the three phases are 120 degrees apart. When using a single phase one gets...
