Re: Anyone want to help crew a Lexcen 51 from Langkawi to Darwin?

Sorry to hear that Manwell, but it's good you were able to make the often difficult call about the boat's condition.

Re: Volunteer delivery crew - Tahiti to Auckland, December

And don't forget that French Polynesia is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Why wouldn't you want to spend a few months enjoying what many sailors only dream about?

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

I've owned both and one wasn't better than the other. They're just different, but overall I prefer monos. Advantages of my current 1999 Westerly 43 mono over my previous 2009 FP Lavezzi cat:

Re: Are all multi hulls so noisy and unpredictable?

Used to be part owner of a 2009 FP Lavezzi which is one of the nicer looking and better performing production cats. Nice boat but it did make a lot of noise under way. The starboard hull creaked like...

Re: Good News from Perth

60 Minutes did a report on the incident - see link below. The tenacity of the father and daughter was impressive. Sounds like they were in shallow water and big breaking waves sank their 11 metre...

Re: Non NZ cyclone season options

Good to see a fellow Westerly owner on the forum casually talking about sailing non-stop between NZ and Chile. You can tell that the Westerlies must be stout sea-worthy sailboats!

Re: Non NZ cyclone season options

Yes, exactly. Just one case is all it takes to change Australia from the laid back, business as usual COVID-free nation it has been most of the time, into one paralyzed by lockdowns and fear. When we...

Re: La Vagabonde's new Trimaran

Riley obviously loves sailing but, more importantly, they want to do something unique and cutting edge to take their YouTube channel to the next level. There's no doubt that an electric-powered...

Re: Tweed Heads, Australia bar

I've crossed those NSW bars several times and will be doing so again soon. They always instil respect, although some more so than others. I've always found Swansea and Camden Haven to be reasonably...

Re: Tweed Heads, Australia bar

Well said. It's perfectly normal for people to want to analyse and understand what happened, including any errors of judgement, but vicious personal attacks reflect the poor character of the people...

Re: Tweed Heads, Australia bar

A healthy fear of bars also helps. Scarier when entering as you can't necessarily tell if waves are breaking.

Reading some of Captain Kyle's recent posts shows that he was aware of the dangers...

Re: Tweed Heads, Australia bar

It's actually quite rare to see sailboats crossing bars with their sails up. Not saying it's a bad idea, but most seem to have faith in their engines.

Re: Worldwide circumnaviation - which charts(vendors) are best?

Isn't the best approach to take a couple of different chart types with you so you can cross-reference and determine which one works best in each region you visit? Definitely take OpenCPN/CM93 as it's...

Re: Electric Hookah Blu3 Nemo

I'd like to correct a previous post I made about the Air Buddy hookah system where I claimed it was a kickstarter product that never really got off the ground. After doing more research it appears to...

Re: Electric Hookah Blu3 Nemo

I think it would be just fine for hull cleaning and maintenance, but what about using it recreationally? Is it fun to use compared to snorkelling? Is the build quality and durability good?

Re: Electric Hookah Blu3 Nemo

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Sounds like there aren't a lot of yachties who actually own the Nemo yet, but it is still quite new to the market. Although cleaning and inspecting my hull (1.8...

Electric Hookah Blu3 Nemo

Does anyone have experience with the Blu3 Nemo lithium-powered hookah system? Looks to be very compact and light, perfect for hull cleaning or very shallow recreational diving. I like that it is...

Re: Do I need my speed transducer?

I remove my transducer when not sailing for more than a couple of days so usually avoid fouling problems. Along the east coast of Australia it is useful to know your speed through the water as we...

Re: Shaun & Julia Sailing... What happened?

In hindsight I don't think Shaun and Julia were that serious about cruising. They saw it more as a business opportunity. A giveaway was the near constant focus on Julia's sex appeal. A much more...

There's been some great advice on this thread. Do you know what an acceptable rate of heal is for protecting an engine?

Re: Optimal cruising RPM

Good to know. In the absence of knowing my exact exhaust temperature, I might now aim to cruise at the higher end i.e. 2,500 RPM (if range isn't an issue) with the occasional short blast at 3,000 RPM...

Re: Optimal cruising RPM

Thanks for the tip. That sounds HOT! It would be useful to install a temperature gauge in any case as advanced warning of any overheating issues.
