Does a genset still make sense?

I have always read that the purpose behind installing a standalone genset rather than just using the main engine to charge batteries is due to the inefficiencies of running a diesel engine with only...

Re: Fremantle to Cairns, departing November, across the bight... how long?

Thanks Ann. This is by no means a shakedown cruise, we have put many many miles underneath her keel living aboard and cruising for going on a decade and all systems on the boat are recent and...

Fremantle to Cairns, departing November, across the bight... how long?

I am tossing around some options and am keen to get some first-hand experience on the suggested passage.

All cruising we have done to date has been VERY leisurely, tending to stop and spend a few...

Re: Series or Parallel Panels?

Spot on, morning coffee had not kicked in yet, I initially typed series and edited to parallel.

My tests 100% confirmed parallel over series if there is any chance of shade at all.

Case closed...

Re: Series or Parallel Panels?

I did my own pseudo scientific testing between parallel and series before deciding for my own installation. 2 sets of new panels side by side at the same time and in a range of insolation conditions...

Alternatives to Actisense EMU-1

I have been using the EMU-1 for over 5 years and in that time, I believe there have only been a 2 or 3 firmware releases, definitely less than 5. And each release has been, for me at least, a rather...

Re: Electric galley without genset

That's the problem... I can crunch numbers and guestimate how many hours * how many amps etc... But that's just a cold calculation.

I was hoping to hear from people who have done something similar...

Electric galley without genset

I just wanted some opinions from others who have gone the electric galley route to help me decide.

Currently, I have a 1120a/h @ 12v LiFePO4 bank charged by 1620w of solar. No genset. Engine...

Re: Generator or more batteries?

Could not agree more. We all cruise in our own way, but personally, locking myself inside an air conditioned cabin with a noisy generator running is stepping over the line.

I'm not saying that...

Re: Generator or more batteries?

Removed my genset a number of years ago. Added a bunch of solar and converted to a big LiFePO4 battery bank.

Zero maintenance and blissful silence.

Have never looked back.

Re: Gone with the Wynns' Leopard catamaran

You are correct, I don't think I've even ever stepped aboard one. But I wasn't speaking of Leopards or even catamarans in general.

Re: Gone with the Wynns' Leopard catamaran

No doubt that is what the recent generation of lightweight production boat manufacturers tell their customers.

For my money and peace of mind, a hull should be a monolithic thing designed to laugh...

Re: Gone with the Wynns' Leopard catamaran

Surely I'm not the only one who raised an eyebrow at the spontaneously cracking window?

When we were watching that, wife and I looked at each other and both said at the same time, hull is flexing,...

Dyneema DUX long bury vs brummel splice

I have just collected the DUX for the rigging replacement on my 65ft schooner. I am replacing all of the rigging with mostly 13mm DUX and will be parcelling and serving it old school style for UV and...

Re: Fiddles on induction cooktop

Interesting, but even though it's fairly low wattage (1800), I will be sticking with a gas oven. I have oodles of gas storage, and only so much inverter capacity. I want to be able to use the (gas)...

Re: Fiddles on induction cooktop

Interesting. So you just slip the silicon sheet between the glass and the pot? Food still heats up just as quickly?

Fiddles on induction cooktop

Hi all. Having finished the solar and LiFePO4 upgrade, I now have copious amounts of power to use up and am considering options for my upcoming oven/stove upgrade. I am leaning towards a traditional...

Re: Charge controller to buss or straight to battery

You might consider adding a "charge" bus separate to your "load" bus with it's own cable to the battery.

Just future proofing for a lithium battery upgrade if you ever go that route...

Re: Right to safe harbour

Sure, the Tongans claim the reef as theirs. Whether we agree with this or not is irrelevant when out there on the big ocean with limited communications and no international court of law at hand.

I...

Right to safe harbour

Yesterday I came across a vlog in my feed in which overhear a conversation on the VHF. In this conversation, the skipper of a NZ flagged 50yo wooden yacht is ordered to leave Minerva reef by Tongan...
