Cockpit enclosure

Needing to replace our cockpit enclosure, and looking for recommendations for the Vancouver area. We had LaFabrica out to the boat, recommended by several friends. The problem is our dodger is very...

Re: lo-tech idea - Mast climbing?

Any system is relatively safe with a belay, whether from a friend, or a self belay. No one in their right minds would ascend a mast with the system shown in the video without one. BTW, you also won't...

Re: sqealing noise

To elicit the noise under sail required us to be essentially surfing down waves and hitting around 7-8 knots. A Yanmar rep advised me to never lock the prop in gear while under sail, so an external...

Re: sqealing noise

So, after an entire summer with squealing noise, I'm revisiting this problem. We cruised under power a lot, but mostly at an rpm that didn't cause the noise. It occurs just above idle, and stops at...

Re: Keel Joint Cracking and Damage - P31

Its hart to tell from the pictures if the vessel suffered a hard strike on the keel. Can you determine if there was any insurance claims? You could consider having the keel inspected before...

Closing fuel vent

This may have come up before, but I can't help wonder about the age-old mantra of topping up fuel tanks before winter layup, the idea being to prevent moisture laden air from entering the tank and...

Re: Galvanised (Galvanized) rigging?

I'm sometimes a little surprised at how well hot dipped galvanized metal stands up to the elements. Galvanized steel fuel tanks can last many, many years. The problem isn't with the material per se,...

Re: Health Care & Diabetes

You don't give your wife's age. Insulin-dependent diabetes can have long term effects on internal organs, blood flow, ocular health, (eyes) and more, with aging ramping up the potential effects. Her...

Re: Yanmar 3JH3CE water pump replacement advice

I have a Yanmar JH in my Hunter 376, with best access to all of the engine I could imagine...except the raw water pump, which is so inaccessible, I had a mechanic replace the impeller this time...

Re: Cruising the Puget Sound in October/November

There are plenty of places to wait out bad weather and wind, plenty of anchorages and marinas all over BC, and, in October, a space is pretty much assured. The weather can be very nice at times, and,...

Re: sqealing noise

Thanks for the input. I think it is significant that the noise occurred IMMEDIATLY following a haulout, never before. The boat was out of the water for only 12 hours or so. I did replace the packing...

Reefing problem Hunter 376

Our Hunter 376 has a fractional rig, with a high roach fully battened main. When close hauled, the sail can be trimmed to a tight flat sail with good windward performance, but, slab reef to the first...

sqealing noise

After a haulout, which was the flood and drain platform type, our new-to-us Hunter 376 immediately developed a kind of sqealing noise. The yard people had a really difficult time getting the boat...

Re: Where to put houseboat if you have no mooring for it?

There is no anchorage in the strait itself, to deep, and unprotected. There are a number of sheltered anchorages available in some areas around Vancouver, many of them crowded with "derelicts" many...

Re: Tiller vs Wheel for Day Sailing and Passage Making

Tillers are simpler, more reliable, and fold out of the way when not in use. Some sailing purists also like them because you can "feel" the water passing over the rudder. Me? I like a wheel.

Re: paint the dinghy?

Kind of what I thought. The expense and the man-hours required just don't seem worth it. Thanks for the replies, and feel free to add more.

Paint the Dinghy

Re: Books on shoreline foraging

Just an additional word of caution for anyone foraging in coastal BC, keep a close watch for black bears, and in many of the more remote areas, grizzlies. Both species forage extensively on the BC...
