Re: What tools are appropriate?

In addition to at least some (maybe most) of the tools listed in previous posts, I wouldn't go for an offshore cruise without cutters that I could use manually to cut any part of my standing rig;...

Re: Rethinking attitudes towards fire suppression

The Element fire extinguisher discharges a potassium-based aerosol, similar to Maus. Like the Maus, the Element isn't UL listed so, in the US at least, can augment but not replace the required...

Re: Rethinking attitudes towards fire suppression

"BCF" stands for bromochlorodiflouromethane, aka Halon 1211 or Freon 12B1. The other major Halon is 1301 (bromotrifluoromethane). The Halons have large ozone depletion (and global warming)...

Re: Rethinking attitudes towards fire suppression

This is spot on, thank you!

Fire blankets are so inexpensive, easy to find (Amazon), and effective as a 1st defense against small fires, that every boat should have one, and know how to use it. ...

Re: Rethinking attitudes towards fire suppression

The Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol is aimed at reducing the amount of HFCs released into the atmosphere; HFCs like 227ea are potent greenhouse gases with high global warming potentials...

Re: AIS Poll

Mikedefieslife and others get it, but tanglewood doesn't.

As I clearly described, it is possible to 'participate' using AIS-receive, it's just requires more work. AIS-receive is good,...

Re: AIS Poll

I don't understand how this comment, or the peeping Tom one, contribute anything positive to the discussion. How can receive-only AIS be anything but neutral or helpful in collision avoidance? In...

Re: New Android Sailing App : SailFreeGPS

I'm satisfied with the current one, but the new ones look good as long as they offer the same functionality. Nice work, thanks!

Re: New Android Sailing App : SailFreeGPS

Well done app, thank you!

FYI, I couldn't get "Landscape presentation" to work on my Samsung S8 Active, or Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2016), but that's not a show stopper.

I look forward to trying...

Re: The morality of interactions with the locals

The interactions described by James Baldwin in his account of his mid-80s circumnavigation (on a Triton!), IMO, approach the ideal answers to these questions. And I very much enjoyed reading it...

Re: It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

Flushing with more water definitely helps. But it's never 100%. I think some of the clogs I experienced were like death by a thousand cuts - slow build-up. I think it was mainly slow build-up...

Re: It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

FWIW, after 20+ yrs with the Jabsco macerator toilet and it's 1 inch hose, I came to the opposite conclusion - every clog I had to clear was in the 1 inch joker, hose or Y-valve. Especially noisome...

Re: It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

I recently replaced my ancient Jabsco electric toilet and redid all the plumbing. Peggie's advice was great and saved me money and grief. One of her many tips was to use K-Y jelly to help with the...
