Re: Family thinking of cruising, new to catamarans

I am not a multihulled sailor but have spoken to many of them in the Caribbean and South Pacific Islands when I was considering buying one. My conclusion was after my conversations with them and my...

Re: Experience with electric winch handles

I've started looking into this because my two electric winches are too old for parts and replacing them is not something I look forward to.

I looked at right angle drills today and they seem to...

Re: Air in hydrolic line

Thanks all. I guess you are right...that bubble has been there after 11 days at sea and I think it dripped a few drips when it was working hard with 11 foot following seas.

It should be fine for...

I now see a small clamp but you can also see the air pocket of about 2 feet of hose

Air in hydrolic line

My autopilot drive is a self contained hydraulic system but has a long (about 15 feet) low-pressure line feeding fuild from a reservoir in the engine room. Doesn't seem to have a clamp on the hose...

Re: Northern Lights or Fischer Panda?

I will give that a try but doubt it is it. When the last AVR was on, it produced power at about 180 volts at 60 Hertz and he couldn't adjust it any lower (120 volt system). After turning it off...

Re: Northern Lights or Fischer Panda?

Very late to this thread but have to say I am disappointed in the conclusion. I once knew a friend 15 years ago who had a fairly new 36' Benny sailboat with a small PF. It was so quiet I could...

Re: 12 volt hydraulic motor for bow thruster

Is that what most do? Does it attach to the front crankshaft pulley?

I am pretty clueless when it comes to bow thrusters.

12 volt hydraulic motor for bow thruster

Does anybody have a bow thruster that is powered by an electric 12 volt hydraulic pump?

I currently have a bow thruster for my boat that is powered by mechanical hydraulic pump attached to an old...

Re: No water maker no drink?

Install a Daulton filter. Best there is. Can have bad water in the tank but better than bottle water coming out the tap.

Re: French Polynesia Cruiser Problems

Late here but I want to clarify something. Cruisers rare get to really know the local people and there true beliefs. I know this because after cruising for 5 years I stayed 2 years in Tonga and...

Re: Cruising Anchor Chain Length

Yes, 70 is common in SP but some anchorages are 100+ they have moorings in the deeper ones so you do not have to plan for that.

As for my previous post, I got the drag wrong....drag is .5, so...

Re: Cruising Anchor Chain Length

First off, chain never gets bar tight. That is impossible. It may be close to straight, but never straight.

Example of my boat in 40 knots of wind:

With 70 of chain out, there will be .5 feet...

Re: Cruising Anchor Chain Length

ABYC table is way overestimating it. Try the formula: .00256 x sq ft of wind age x kts squared x drag (2 for flat surface, 1.4 for round pole)

Re: Cruising Anchor Chain Length

I may missed it but it seems these post are a bit weak on the details that make up the outcome of anchoring. It is a combination of type and size of anchor, water depth, current, windage, waterlevel...

Re: Heavy sailboats are slower and

So many generalizations here it misleading. I have a long fin keel of 8 tons but it is 6.5 feet deep and all the weight is the bottom 2 feet, not shallow. I blow by lighter boats with same...

Re: Looking at the Amels, Swans, Hallberg Rassys - long term value?

I hate the engine access on the new Amels. The Amel 55 I look at, the only engine access was under the cockpit...aka, you had to move the table out of the way and lift the cockpit floor up to get to...

Re: Circumnavigation - Advice from you

95% :)

Now that I own a ketch I have noticed we seem to be only about 3-4% of the boats with Schooners being 1-2%.

Re: Circumnavigation - Advice from you

Many people want to buy the boat to do the circumnavigation and then get the experience with that boat for a few years before going.

With that said, there is a problem with that. Boats that are...

Re: Baja Bash / Hunter 45 Center Cockpit

I am a Whitby 55 owner now, but am a Hunter fan and owned and sailed one for 30,000 nm while also going halfway around the world on my H376. It was a 'Friday' boat. The supervisors were not around...

Re: Preventer Rigging -- Lessons from the Platino Disaster

In seas with cross swell, many sailors prefer to have out at least some main to stable the boat. A stable boat is safer than a rolling boat.

Re: Has anyone been following SpaceX's Starlink?
