Re: Which Boat Window Materials?

Lexan is impact resistant where the acrylic shatters but not as good optically. I've found that carefull cleaning with a soft rag, old diaper, prevents scratches. I'm replacing the fogging tempered...

If you can find the schedule 80 your chance of success is way better.

Re: Bilge Pumps Experience

I got tired of pumps and switches that are located in the bilge failing. I installed a Jabsco diaphragm pump a couple of feet above the bilge and used a Grocco AS100 air pressure switch, like what...

Re: Southern Cross 31 or Bayfield 29

Just my preference but I like the Southern Cross. I've always thought it to be stout cruiser you'd want for going anywhere. Full keel is not the speediest but comfy. Compare the ports, I'm not sure...

Re: Which size and type of chain?

I'd say it depends a lot on the windlass gypsy. What do you have? BBB or high test are different. It would be costly to change out, if you can get one.

Not much difference in 10mm, 3/8 or 11 mm.

Re: WSF Hyak collision update.

These are my home waters as they are to Taysa. He admitted to passing the ferry as it was docked at Lopez and was aware that it was probably going to be bearing down on him soon. At 5 knots you can't...

Re: Dickenson Newport "A permanently open fresh air inlet MUST be installed or dedica

If you read the manual for a diesel Newport there is no special stove pipe just a 3" pipe and the standard deck pipe and somewhere an open vent (a dorade?) to allow outside air in to replace that...

Re: Dickenson Newport "A permanently open fresh air inlet MUST be installed or dedica

I have dorades that work just fine for providing air for the Dickinson but as mentioned gusty winds can be a real problem. If you get a flameout burst of air down the stack the room quickly fills...

Re: Winterizing in the pacific northwest

If you are in the water there is no need to do anything. I've found that the water temperature keeps the boat above freezing. Sometimes I'll put in a 100watt lightbulb or two in to help keep it dry...

Re: Messed up painting my cockpit

The only surefire way I can think of to prep non-skid is to mask off the area with plastic sheet and use a small sandblaster, hand held gun with a hose stuck in a can of sand. Other than a chemical...

Re: MacGregor 26 sailing in a full gale, 50mph winds, 18' seas

In 1980 I was crossing the Bahama bank in a Venture 25 (pre Macgregor) as Hurricane Allen blew through. I got back to Bimini after three days of beating into it and clocked the winds for the next...

Re: Autohelm (Raymarine) actuator replacement

It's supposed to have a 500# static rating so it probably wouldn't back drive. You're right about the duty cycle, running downwind in wallowy seas may be pushing it. It is an acme thread simple screw...

Autohelm (Raymarine) actuator replacement

Searching the threads I found mention of replacing the Raymarine linear actuators (what you would call type 1, I believe) with an industrial version. Has anyone actually done this?

I like my old...

Re: Radar dome location??

I guess a little dramatic but I've heard recent first hand accounts that showed a 20 minute delay and another that indicated a three mile error in location. Who you gonna trust? Your eyes. By the way...

Re: Radar dome location??

Radar really is only dependable way to keep track of traffic, being real time. Here in the Puget sound the AIS tracking seems to have a lag time that means they could run you over and be gone before...

Re: Raymarine Type 2S linear arm drive oil

Never grease a ball screw actuator, a little silicon spray maybe. The balls need to be free to roll around. I took an Autohelm (Raymarine) actuator and tried to grease it. Not good. Found another on...

Re: Radar dome location??

Mounting radar on the mast with a swivel joint just under the spreaders I've seen two problems. That close to the mast I have a bit of a blind spot dead astern. Problematic when in narrow channels in...

Re: Manual windlass stuck clutch

Mine was stuck for a couple of years, so like a fool I was playing out by hand. I've got two bars, a short one for everyday use and a three foot one for when I've got a lot of chain out. One day I...

Re: 20 & 10 Lb Aluminum Worthington Propane Tanks recert?

Any major propane supplier will recertify tanks (after 12 years and every 5 years there after) if you have the newer valve. If not it's probably $45 for the new valve plus the recert.

Re: Changing From Gas To Diesel

Since the Yanmar is smaller you should have plenty of room to work with. One thing I would reccomend is to center the shaft in the cutless and secure it there. You can do that by pulling up, down and...

Yes it's been really foggy in the San Juans this last week. Islands not showing up until closer than 50 feet. Sometimes not lifting till way after noon or hanging on in the main channels (shipping...

Re: Prop shaft vibration

With that boat the rudder is nowhere near. I assume the prop has proper clearance. Is it two or three bladed or been changed? Was it a problem before the new mounts and where they sized to that...
