Smile SL 555 Seatiger windlass rebuild

This summer my trusty SL 555 windlass failed; it stopped ratcheting one direction. I was out in the wild at the time, and did a temporary fix which consisted of cleaning out all of the grease (which...

Re: Profurl P40 Rebuild

I think the beefy snap rings are just because those are the standard size. They were very easy to find on the internet at less than $2. I think that what made them so difficult to remove was a slight...

Re: Seatiger 555 Windlass

I hear you; the guts are a potpourri of dissimilar metals. The main gears are all regular steel, which means they corrode onto their respective bronze or SS shafts, making removal a nightmare; you...

Re: Profurl P40 replacement bearing kits

No, you can tie a halyard around the foil to keep it on the stay, then remove the drum set screws, turnbuckle and fittlngs, tap the drum off the foil. It will drop off the bottom. Put the turnbuckle...

Profurl P40 Rebuild

At the beginning of last season I found my P40 jib furler drum frozen up. I was able to get it turning at the time by putting the furling line on a winch (a real no-no) and breaking it loose. I knew...

Seatiger 555 Windlass

My veteran 555 windlass failed the first time out this spring. Instead of ratcheting back and forth the gypsy turned back and forth. I popped off the bottom cover and found the grease inside had...

CMAP NT+ proprietary chip

Good morning brain trust,

As explained in another post, I have been on the hard for the last six years; meanwhile the cruising world has apparently passed me by. I have the older Raymarine RL 70 C...

Brookhouse IMUX – ST: lost password

Good morning brain trust,

I installed a Brookhouse IMUX-ST a number of years back when they were the hot item. It did a great job tying my NMEA 0183 and C talk together, as well as sending it to...

Re: Torqeedo 1003 quality

Thanks, that is very interesting. FWIW they told me the same thing, that it could only be repaired by the factory, warranty or not, and did not / would not sell parts (even to someone in Panama). I...

Um, please go back to the original post (OK, I haven't actually met you, although I've sailed in your bay several times)...

I'm not a dealer of anything, I had very high hopes for my motor, it...

It is with great sadness that I pass on the news that S/V Yacht Cruz was lost at sea during a passage from Cabo to San Diego. A distress call was received on January 10th, and the bodies of her crew,...

Torqeedo 1003 quality

Two and a half years ago I purchased one of these for secondary use with my 9' RIB. It saw little use because it proved too gutless for significant winds or seas, and it was in storage for a year and...

Re: ULSD and old engines

Sure, I could be wrong about that. I know that in both Colombia and Panama all diesel was 10% biodiesel by law, and I presumed it was the same here. I'll ask. At any rate that hasn't caused me any...

ULSD and old engines

I am in Rio Dulce Guatemala. I have a choice of two fuel stations. One sells imported ULSD and the other "regular" diesel, which is probably a higher sulfur biodiesel. Right now my tank is about ten...

Re: Quality of Navionics charts for Bahamas

Thanks as always Mark. I also have Garmin Bluechart on the iPad and it is pretty underwhelming... Useless in Belize, but it does seem better in the Bahamas. I just did a side by side comparison of...

Quality of Navionics charts for Bahamas

Hello,

Can anyone comment on the quality of the Navionics charts (Xtraverse) used in iNavX for the Bahamas? We are headed that way this year. We have become fond of the iNavX charts in Belize,...

Should it be synthetic or a...

Re: Volvo penta md2030 sail drive oil?

More info: I took a walk over to her boat and I am looking at the data plate. The sail drive is a 130S-A. The Volvo specs say ATF and it has 15W40 in it. So what is the drill from here?

I having a happy hour discussion with a friend who has an MD2030 sail drive. Apparently it currently contains motor oil. I thought these things were supposed to have ATF in them. Am I right? If so,...

Mark,

I was responding to your sentence "you do not see many boats with Xantrex chargers out cruising". That sounded like it included Freedoms as well. My point was that the majority of boats out...

Hi Mark,

I removed my original Heart Freedom 10 after 23 years in service in 2010. It was overheating. It turns out it needed a new fan, which was $4 at Radio Shack. It's now alive and well and...

Xantrex Freedom 20 cooling fan type?

My fan is dying. I thought I was clever and got the info I needed before I left the boat... I measured it at 5" x 5" x 1" and it says 12 v 0.72 A. However, when googling it I see it must be a 120 mm...
