Re: Pro/Con of outboard for blue water cruising

Quite a difference between a decently engineered outboard setup and just throwing a motor on a corner of a transom.

Re: Experience on open salon design monohulls - security down below in a seaway

Typically, the water doesn't get terribly rough inside most marinas...

Re: Pro/Con of outboard for blue water cruising

On a few boats, mostly smaller cruisers or race boats, there are motor wells that help keep the top of the engine out of the water and the prop in the water.

Re: Steel Vs Fibreglass

Holes around the waterline... Lightning?
Maintenance: do you prefer the heat and noise of grinding, cutting, and welding; or the mess and itch of resin, dust, and glass fibre?

Re: Importance of Life-raft when coastal cruising?

And if you are on the paranoid side or sail across oceans (not the original question of this thread), should you be heavily dependent upon just one life raft, especially if it's one of the more...

Re: Importance of Life-raft when coastal cruising?

Not much has been said about budgets, which are tight for many sailors. Or priorities. Before buying a liferaft, I'd spend money on PFDs, tethers, radio, PLBs/EPIRBs, wooden plugs, flares, survival...

Re: The criteria of "blue"

All this about handholds and such reminds me of the Prom deck shopping area in the old RMS Queen Mary. It had a cork-based floor and, in rough seas, some of the women passengers would dig in their...

Re: "The Human Cost of Weather Related Disasters”

Another factor is increased fire risk and damage from people building many more houses in the trees and wildlands.

Re: Boat Size

Yep, buying a boat is even more personal and variable than buying a car. And the best boat to learn on may be very different from the best boat to cruise the ocean. Lots of good things can be said...

Re: Sharks and other scary stuff

Hanging off the back of a boat exposes people to much more danger from carbon monoxide, being slammed against the boat, or prop strikes, than from sharks.

Re: Watch out for Patricia

Think Barra may be getting power back in the next 24 hours-ish. People there probably have a lot of work on their plates for the coming week and will be busy and tired.

The difference if some fortyish miles between La Manzanilla and Manzanillo (with an oh) was probably about the difference between Cat 4 and 3 winds and tropical storm winds. Plus or minus twenty...

Re: Watch out for Patricia

Perhaps Zee will have to do some boat laundry if any salt moisture got in... Much worse could have been. A news report said Barra had roof damage, some trees and poles down, some surge.

Re: Corpus Christi sailing

CC bay is deep by TX standards. Tides are moderate. Wind driven eater level changes can occur during a strong Texas blue norther, depending on topography.
