On a few boats, mostly smaller cruisers or race boats, there are motor wells that help keep the top of the engine out of the water and the prop in the water.

Not much has been said about budgets, which are tight for many sailors. Or priorities. Before buying a liferaft, I'd spend money on PFDs, tethers, radio, PLBs/EPIRBs, wooden plugs, flares, survival...

Hanging off the back of a boat exposes people to much more danger from carbon monoxide, being slammed against the boat, or prop strikes, than from sharks.

The difference if some fortyish miles between La Manzanilla and Manzanillo (with an oh) was probably about the difference between Cat 4 and 3 winds and tropical storm winds. Plus or minus twenty...

Perhaps Zee will have to do some boat laundry if any salt moisture got in... Much worse could have been. A news report said Barra had roof damage, some trees and poles down, some surge.

Zee saw Solitary Bird afloat and marina looking okay. Guessing Barra saw more like cat one mostly for wind. narrow radius of highest winds plus terrain likely made a big difference.

CC bay is deep by TX standards. Tides are moderate. Wind driven eater level changes can occur during a strong Texas blue norther, depending on topography.
