Re: Nanni 4.38 with Kubota base

Hey Thomas, I'm guessing that Kubota doesn't publish parts catalogs that the public can find and use. This makes it pretty difficult! The Nanni is based on a Kubota V1505, so there are some old parts...

Re: Run 1 or 2 engines?

Hey Paul, take a look at the Yanmar service manual for the GM series:

The chapter on the governor goes into...

Re: Shower Sump

Try the Whale Gulper. It's been problem free for me. It's a single diaphragm, so it is a very simple design with very few things to go wrong. Of course it needs to sit outside of the sump, so it may...

Re: Sailing west coast vancouver to panama

Pressing on in July would be very dangerous. There is generally at least one severe storm that travels up the coast each July. Being 200 miles offshore would increase the danger as he is further from...

Re: Google to use Satellites for real time worldwide AIS tracking

Very cool. I wonder if in the future, they can then transmit those collected AIS back to earth to allow ships at sea to pick up the signal and have over the horizon AIS capabilities.

Re: Sailing west coast vancouver to panama

Leaving in June is good time to go. Optimal would be July/August with the lowest chance to gales, but June shouldn't be a problem. So long as they don't go lower than 30N deg until November.

Re: Sailing west coast vancouver to panama

I sailed to Mexico from Vancouver last September. Leaving later than mid September adds risk of storms off the oregon coast. I'd suggest leaving in early September and spending a few months in San...

Re: Sad News Again Off Mexico

The charts do not show a light on Isla Norte, nor do I see a tower on the sat view. If the watch was not totally alert or looking at the charts, he may not have seen the island.

The Coronado...

Re: Sad News Again Off Mexico

I agree with Sabray. While the charts in Mexico are off by a few miles, google maps and satellite imagery is all spot on to the foot. I have confirmed this in Mexico with google maps on my phone with...

Re: Collision avoidance, tsunami debris

NOAA has a forecast of where they expect the bulk of the debris to be based on models of ocean currents. Looks like they see it north of Hawaii, this would put it right in the way. It will be mostly...

re: Best Solar Panels For The Buck

Thought I'd play around with this a little more, produced a model in excel to draw up the theoretical power curves.

This graph shows total power production in my above example of one substring on...

re: Best Solar Panels For The Buck

When you connect 2 panels in parallel and due to shading, the panels put out different voltages, the lower voltage panel is driven at the higher voltage. The power it will put out at that higher...

re: Best Solar Panels For The Buck

Pete, your panels are 54 cells all in series. Each cell produces approx 0.5v at Vmp and 0.7 at Voc. The specs on the panels show 26.8 Vmp and 32.8 Voc, so the numbers make sense. The diodes in the...

Re: Yanmar 2gm oil leak troubleshoot ...

I recently replaced my rear driveshaft seal on my 2gm as I suspected it was the source of a similar leak, turns out it wasn't from there. I still haven't stopped it, but I think it may be the valve...

Re: Solar Voodoo? 24v Panels in a 12v System ?

It would be quite rare to find a modern panel without at least 1 bypass diode built in. Reason being, they are designed to be used in rooftop installations. most of these installations use many...

Re: Solar Voodoo? 24v Panels in a 12v System ?

You can't mix different panels in series, they all need to be the same. The string will be limited by the cell with the lowest current level.

I don't have it backwards, series is definitely better...

Regarding series or parallel, please take a look at my post on a previous thread:

Re: Four Solar Panels - Parallel , Series or Series-Parallel

So to summarize the discussion on the best approach for panels on a boat, with shading consideration:

Series:
- Best shade handling if all panels get the same illumination (pointed the same way)...

Re: Four Solar Panels - Parallel , Series or Series-Parallel

Demeter: Nope, sorry. All parallel sets will need to operate at the same voltage (unshaded panels are still running at max voltage). As shaded sections are bypassed, they no longer contribute, so the...

Re: Four Solar Panels - Parallel , Series or Series-Parallel

- Series-Parallel pairs: Would allow use of smaller gauge wire (or lower line loss) as it will operate at 24v nominal instead of 12v. However, partial shading on one of the pairs (even 1 cell) will...

Re: Four Solar Panels - Parallel , Series or Series-Parallel

Yes, you've got it. However, based on your description of how the panels will be mounted, the series-parallel arrangement makes sense. Putting all 6 in series would mean that if one of the sets was...

Here is a good article that shows the benefits of series wiring and the layout of bypass diodes:

Re: Four Solar Panels - Parallel , Series or Series-Parallel

I don't see how this is the case at all. Please explain why you would need additional diodes. A fully shaded panel will have all bypass diodes active and the current from the unshaded panel will pass...
