Re: Wanting to go around Cape Horn

As other posts have noted, the first thing which needs to be clarified to provide a reasonable answer to the original question, is a little more detail on what the OP has in mind.
First, I would...

Re: preventer attachment to boom

I do something very similar. I use a vang-preventer on either side that leads back to the cockpit for normal use, but if I want a sturdier preventer for heavy weather or long down wind runs, I have a...

Re: Ballast in tar

Actually, from past experience with owning a 28 ft steel hulled sloop, ballast in tar or pitch is not such a great idea. Water will seep between the hull and the tar and cause corrosion, which is...

Re: Winter Sailing in Alaska

Ditto, a beautiful boat. I have only spent one year in Alaska, en route from Japan to Canada, and ended up wintering over in Cordova because I didn't want to be caught out in the more extreme winter...

Re: Knot Funny

Funny, big discussion about the cleat hitch. Personally, I never use it and don't like it because it just seems so many people make a mess of this simple hitch ending up with a jammed line, and in...

Re: Is this a bad idea?

My own thoughts would be if you think this is a good boat that will meet your needs then make a stupidly low offer. You have plenty of time and other opportunities will come along if the boat is...

Re: Solo Sailor Missing in Bass Strait

Agree with above sentiments. I have sailed that area single-handed many times.
I also thought that 57 feet is a lot of boat for one person to manage. One has to compensate size with more complexity...

Re: Am I biting off too much to chew?

And 9f course a factor most of us have to consider is operating costs, which tend to increase exponentially with waterline length..

Re: Is an electric windlass a necessity when living on the hook solo?

So it seems, in answer to the OP, "is an electric windlass necessary when single-handed?", the answers vary. Some simply and categorically say yes. Some, generally those who have changed over to an...

Re: Am I biting off too much to chew?

Skimmed the many posts here but strongly agree with general thrust, 36-40 foot is pretty optimal size for short-handed long distance sailing.

Re: Is an electric windlass a necessity when living on the hook solo?

I am not going to disagree with much of the good advice and opinion but will offer an alternative perspective as a long term single hander. I have a 12 ton boat and a manual anchor winch and have...

Re: Very Flexible Sealant (not adhesive) For Polycarbonate?

So I am wondering why not just use a UV resistant silicone sealant such as used in roofs and gutters?

Re: How is your InReach or Iridium service working out for you?

Thank you Snore. Some useful info. I use an Iridium satphone and have wondered whether changing to GO makes sense. I am curious about iWatchSat (Apple only I presume). I have tried to find a...

Re: Night Watch Deadman's Switch?

I have been using the "Watch Commandser" for some 15 years or so now and am surprised that they are not more widely known and used by short and single-handed sailors. It is designed by a short-handed...

Re: Bass Strait in early winter

Hi Jim, lots of advice already that I won't add to or comment on. I just wanted to say that I have sailed that route single-handed on my own boat many times and the time of year was never a real...

No doubt true about Northern Reef. I certainly hope I never have to make a claim on them.

Re: Insuring Aus registered boat

I have found Northern Reef to be pretty flexible and competitive. My boat is 60 years old, steel and I single hand, so most companies wouldn't touch me or are ridiculously expensive.

Re: Is self steering possible or practical?

A beautiful boat.
As usual, lots of opinions and good suggestions. I can also recommend a Hydrovane. I have a similar overhang but a narrower transom and found the Hydrovane works well. A number...

Sure is a beautiful b[oat. As usual, lots of opinions with many valid points. My view is that I love the simplicity and robustness of windvane steering and no need for electrical power. I have...

Re: Muir Hercules Manual Winch - How Do I Lube it ?
