Re: Racor Filter Vacuum Gauge
Don't worry about it at all. Install the gauge, run the engine for a few minutes and forget about it. Seems I'm always breaking into my fuel system for one reason or another and I've never had a... |

Re: Diesel Engine Fires
I was faced with a bad one too once. Turbo charger exploded at high rpm and seven gallons of lube oil sprayed out and ignited everything in the engine compartment. Two small handhelds were just... |

Re: diesel engine fires
Glad I misread. Engine compartment no place for battery switch. Most portable fire extinguishers on submarines were dry chemical (purple K) at that time. |

Re: Ideal Windlass Model CHWSO
I have one on my boat. The thing is a monster of a windlass. Very salty. People have commented that it looks like it belongs on a large ship. Anyone know offhand if there are replacement motors... |

Re: diesel engine fires
Not real sure I'd want the battery switch on my boat in the totally enclosed engine compartment for several very good reasons. Also have to call you on your comment about the Navy using only water... |

Re: Any Preppers ?
Might add a shotgun. Watch the anti gun folks digging for roots while eating hot stew with fresh meat in it. Also, at sea, easier to coax a bird or fish into the larder if necessary with such a... |

Re: Shot gun used; Matt Rutherford glad he had it
It is a tough call. I don't have guns onboard now, but haven't traveled outside U.S. waters. The elderly couple I bought my boat from cruised the Carribean and South america for ten years straight.... |

Re: Shot gun used; Matt Rutherford glad he had it
I think my friend was talking about a daylight situation where one could tell that they were really in danger and see what they were attempting to deter. He's not a flake, rode an ice breaker for... |

Re: Shot gun used; Matt Rutherford glad he had it
I mentioned keeping a shotgun on board to a friend who is retired CG and now a delivery captain. He advised me to get a high powered rifle instead. He said to assume that any vessel approaching mine... |

Re: Where to found 12V when the engine is running
After some consideration, I installed a gauge with a mechanical sensor on my boat. Still ran a hot wire for instrument lights with a switch. |

Re: Hurricane Season: What's The Fuss
Folks who live in hurricane prone areas have plans for what they'll do when one is approaching. Many yards have haulout lists and charge a yearly fee to be put on the list. Some are first come, first... |

re: Rules & Etiquette for Visitors Aboard Your Boat
IMHO, inviting guest and expecting them to share costs or pay a daily rate makes them sort of....not guests. If guests bring things, great, but I'd be a little offended if they offered to share... |

Re: A cheaper alternative to West Systems ?
+1 for U.S. Composites. Consider that there are a lot more brand names than there are manufacturers. |

Re: A true end to the multi vs mono debate
What a bunch of wusses. On April 5, 1789, Captain William Bligh and eighteen others were set adrift from HMS Bounty in a 23' open boat with a beam of 6' 9" and a draft of 2' 9". Onboard they had 32... |

Re: Custom Yachts LTD winches
Thanks, these has covers on them and are bright as new. The retaining snap ring type thing looked like a solid ring until I really looked at it closely and saw the little notch. They do seem to be... |

Re: Custom Yachts LTD winches
Thanks for the banter and name calling. Turns out there's what looks like a solid ring retaining the cover plate, but it is in fact a three layered flat snap ring of sorts wound around the shaft.... |

Re: Custom Yachts LTD winches
Apparantly we're having communication difficulties translating between Amaricanese and Aussietalk. I interpreted the first replies as sarcasm due to the rolling eyes and "yeah, what brand" type... |

Re: Custom Yachts LTD winches
Yes, Custom Yachts LTD is the brand as engraved on top of the barrels with the size of the winch. They are listed in equipment lists of many yachts for sale as Custom Yachts LTD stainless winches.... |

Custom Yachts LTD Winches
How do you strip these winches? There are no screws in the winch handle hole and no visible way to remove the drum?? Can't find anything on them by googling. |

Re: Solar powered lights
I live on my boat. If I don't hear anything real negative I'll try it. The store has them energized on a display and some of them appear to be very bright. |

Solar Powered Lights
I'm rewiring my boat and will be moving it before the job is complete, about a four day trip. I'm thinking about buying some solar powered lighting, the type that is made for outdoor use on patios,... |
