We put on offer on an older sailboat 40' in San Diego and the only surveyor that I've found that comes highly recommended is Kells Christian. However the listing broker bans him from his boats, which...

Re: Rigging Modification - Good or Bad Idea?

Thanks for your input. Sounds like I need to evaluate the ground tackle system, the execution of the bowsprit and how it effected performance. I do appreciate having the venue!

Rigging Modification - Good or Bad Idea?

In our boat search we came across a 36 Cabot that we have had our eye on.
While looking at this picture we noticed the rigging has been changed from the original. They added a bow sprit extension...

Yes, thanks for the encouragement. Neither of us is ready to give up yet!
We are just being realistic for the next year until it all gets sorted. We can't imagine not sailing, so I'll know we'll...

Keeping the Dream Alive

We've had to postpone our bluewater boat search due to my spinal surgery next week and my partner's recent rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis.
Sometimes its hard to see the "dream" when life throws you...

Re: Are We in Over Our Heads, or Just Ignorant About What it Takes to Refit ?

We rescinded our offer. We realized that at this time in our lives it's not the boat for us. I'm real sad, but I'm sure soon, another boat will catch my eye...
Thanks to everyone for your help! ...

Re: Are We in Over Our Heads, or Just Ignorant About What it Takes to Refit ?

Thanks Catamount for the great advice. Today we are leaning towards walking away. We really don't want to make our lives miserable for a year or more. Perhaps if we had all our projects at our home...

Re: Are We in Over Our Heads, or Just Ignorant About What it Takes to Refit ?

Yes, the tanks are a concern for me. And even tho there is a lot to like we are not in love with this boat yet. But then again I wouldn't put so much effort into a boat I didn't like. We'll have to...

Re: Are We in Over Our Heads, or Just Ignorant About What it Takes to Refit ?

We have plans to sail the S. Pacific in a few years. For a decade or more. It would be another LONG post to go into our criteria and type of boat but very similar to SaltyMonkey's list of potentials....

Re: Are We in Over Our Heads, or Just Ignorant About What it Takes to Refit ?

We've done the spreadsheet of costs, time, labor in hours and realize the unexpected should be expected!
The labor looks overwhelming, the costs doable but intimidating, however we do realize that...

Re: Are We in Over Our Heads, or Just Ignorant About What it Takes to Refit ?

Good stuff.
We are a little mad.
Haven't bought the boat yet. And haven't found a boat for $70k that fits the bill, or even near it. It's a cutter and old, yes. Don't want a loan and couldn't get...

Re: Are We in Over Our Heads, or Just Ignorant About What it Takes to Refit ?

Good points.
We live in the PNW and are not young anymore. The engine is not salvageable, the rudder needs to be split open before determined the extent of repair.
We like to work hard... but need...
