Re: Alarm / Bed Shaker

I find bed shakers easily at the waterfront dive bars.
What a way to wake up!

Re: Looking to buy a boat but a lot of rust on the engine!!

A poorly maintained engine room points to poor maintenance throughout.
If you’re handy with tools, and want to take on a project, make a very low offer.
Don’t worry about insulting the owner, what...

Re: Boat slip in Honolulu

I would urge you to get on the waitlist for a slip asap, and do so at all state harbors on the island. Once you get a slip, at any harbor, take it. Then it’s easier to transfer to a harbor nearer...

Re: Newish Northern Lights generator leaking oil

Be careful not to overfill the oil sump. This can make a mess in a hurry!
Remember that it is not imperative to fill the oil to the high mark on the dipstick, and maintain the level at that point. ...

Re: Red Diesel - Can I use it after approx 3 years

You’re referring to “road tax”, which means it is applicable to motor vehicles that use highways, not off road vehicles like farm tractors, heavy equipment or boats.

Re: Problem with Morse-type shift/throttle control

Isolate the components and move them independently to locate the source of the problem.
If you need to replace cables, buying the cheapest available parts is not the best option, as quality cables...

Re: 50 ft Willard Navy utility boat

With such a rounded hull, I thought it was important to keep things light up high, so that was my best shot with the skills I have.

Re: 50 ft Willard Navy utility boat

I loaded up a handful of photos, but they somehow didn’t make it with the message, I’ll dredge back through and post them up later.

Re: 50 ft Willard Navy utility boat

Old thread, but I couldn’t resist an update.
I bought it, and sailed fromLahaina to Haleiwa immediately.
This was right after the tsunami wrecked many of the piers, so our harbormaster was happy to...

Re: Aftermarket LED for Nav Lights--DON'T

LED festoon bulbs are no improvement over the incandescence bulbs, they’ll suffer the same corrosion problems due to poorly waterproofed housings.
I’ve learned to appreciate the sealed LED fixtures,...

Re: Yet More Sailing Amongst The Breakers

No credit to the captain for the boats survival, that was purely luck that the boat stayed high on the wave and did not broach immediately.
What concerns me is that it appeared that they headed...

Re: Turbo Questions, Yanmar 4JH2-TE

While you’re there, have a look at the hot side of the turbo. And condition of the mixer elbow. Any rust or buildup on the exhaust side will negatively affect boost, and may be a sign that the...

Re: Is this considered gelcoat? How do I fix?

Might be easier and cheaper to cover the whole area with Starboard or similar product.
Gelcoat and glass will be messy, stinky and costly, as well as labor intensive.

Re: Split Coupling Shear Pin

What Len said!
Time to check all alignment and fit, from propeller to trans output, possibly even torque coupler.

Re: Nylon hose barbs below waterline?

As long as you’re being picky, you should insist on flanged seacocks and substantial backing plates, as well as bronze fittings and reinforced hoses.
The sink drain does look very fragile!

Re: Stuffing Box Question.

Modern packing materials correctly installed can make a stuffing box dry without the inherent dangers of dripless seals.
The farther you sail from civilization, the more important it becomes that...

Re: Stuffing Box Question.

Hose in a hose for reducer?
It’s worked for me, I used Rector Seal#5 from Lowe’si. It is slippery enough to help with installation, and then becomes sticky.

Re: Blister repair when are you done? What can be left as is?

You’re too deep into it to quit now, yes you need to grind out every blister, and wash the wounds with water many times over then solvent before you start filling them in, or even thinking about...

Re: Inline strainer between Raw Water pump and Heat Exchanger?

The strainer downstream of the pump is a great idea, and will collect all that moves that way, but contrary to what you’d think, not all impeller debris will migrate downstream.
I’ve tracked down...

Re: Diver applied underwater paint?

Any paint job is only as good as the substrate below it, and it’s pretty difficult to achieve a properly clean surface underwater.
So even if there was a great underwater anti fouling paint...

Re: What's Under Those Engine Mounts??

A flex coupling is not going to help your vibration issues.
Accurate alignment must be accomplished BEFORE inserting any flex spacer.
Good luck drilling out that stainless bolt, use a slow drill...

Re: What's Under Those Engine Mounts??

A spacer in between the coupling flanges would move the engine forward.

Re: Heat Exchanger Cleaning

Don’t forget that your raw water system begins with the intake grating and ends at the exhaust outlet, and the whole thing demands diligent inspection.
Inspection interval is probably listed in the...
