From sail magazine, “art of motor sailing” updated Aug 2017

Re: Engine overheating when motorsailing upwind

Hunter 42 with Yanmar suggests less than 10deg. Perkins 4-108 manual says 25deg without loss of oil pressure.

Re: Engine overheating when motorsailing upwind

Check engine spec for maximum tilt. If you are heeled over, at some point the pick up tube will not be in oil. As you tilt the engine the oil flows down one side more than the other.

How much time do you have?
I would sail up the coast to Puerto Vallarta, head West to Hawaii.
Watch weather and catch the pineapple express to Oregon.

Re: does diesel vent need to be open when not in use?

An interesting experiment but it seemed to focus on temperature change instead of than temperature difference. In the experiment the tank tracks the temperature of the barn. In a boat, the fuel...

Re: Block windlass chain hole

On my Lofrans windless the chain drops straight down into the chain locker. I hooked up a stopper to the end of the chain when underway. No water gets in.

Re: Purchasing Boat in Panama, transport to FL

Is it a Panama flagged vessel? If not US documented, you will have to take care of that.

Re: Gemini 105mc conversion Diesel to EV?

Remember that 20kW at 48v is over 400amps!
You will never get 20kW if your system and internal battery resistance is more than a few milli ohms. 1mOhm x 400amps = 0.4V and I2R = 160watts.

Re: Sea water back-flow through engine

If your engine is below the water line this can happen and did to me. Water would slowly flow through the engine, fill up the water lift muffler and when I would crank would get water in oil. I...

I only tested to just under 10kW. When I go over 10kW the voltage at the sensor for the generator starts to fall as more and more current comes from the batteries. When the voltage drops to < 48V...
