Re: Sailboat depth transducer - useful?

Depth sounders are worth the investment to minimize wear and tear on a swing keel in shallow waters. We've marked the Dacron pennant for our 3000# swing keel in 1 foot increments so we have an idea...

Re: Florida Homes with Docks

If the Tatyana 48 has a 70’ bridge clearance, the 49’ (nominal) fixed bridge clearance near Port Mayaca will be a show stopper if the mast is up.

Re: Leaking impeller (not from the cover)

I had a water pump had been professionally rebuilt only a few years before it started to leak a serious amount of water when motoring. It turned out that the shaft was scored, necessitating...

Re: Sailboat depth transducer - useful?

My boat will float in ~2’ of water (although it likes to have the swing keel down for sailing) and we keep it at a floating dock with 2.5 ft MLW.

Most of the time we can’t see the bottom when the...

Re: Bilge switches and sizing

Those of us who grew up with slide rules had to keep track of decimal points in our calculations. We otherwise could be off by well over a factor of 10.

It can be a useful skill when dealing...

Re: Bilge switches and sizing

I have switched (pun intended) from mechanical action float switches to Johnson Ultima electronic switched after some failures of both the pneumatic and mechanical types on the two boats I have owned...

Re: Bilge switches and sizing

Someone is confused: 500 GPM is actually 30,000 GPH. But anyway, bilge pumps tend to be rated in GPH.

Furthermore, the actual output of a bilge pump depends on the output hose diameter and...

Re: Autopilot steering off course

I had a problem with a 30° error and it turned out to be due to some steel-framed beach lounges that were store in a quarter berth neat the flux gate compass. The marine electronics tech that...

Re: Cape Cod Canal

Good advice from previous posts. The RR bridge could be a problem if you find yourself at maximum current on your way south (west in the canal). We once were delayed leaving Provincetown and passed...

Re: Securing Halyard for Winter

I’ve been using 1/8” braid messengers for many years. The Dacron running rigging is completely removed from weather exposure over the winter. Keeping the messengers under tension reduces the slap...

Re: Avionics charted depths....

The user feedback (e.g., “sonar” chart view) is questionable, IMHO. You don’t know about the user depth sensor calibration or otherwise know how the user data is indexed to the vertical datum. ...

Re: Teak Oils

We used Semco for many years, after giving up on teak oil. Since then we have migrated to Cetol and finally to proper varnish. However, we did not have teak decks.

If I were to deal with teak...

Re: Milwaukee 28 volt angle drill capstan system

FWIW the Winchrite specs actually show slightly more torque than the Milwaukee, so the power issue is really a wash.

The Winchrite has a lower profile and comes with a holster for bulkhead...

Re: Milwaukee 28 volt angle drill capstan system

Yes, but the Winchrite will work indefinitely in the rain or in the presence of salt spray. Of course, you could put a plastic bag over the Milwaukee 28, but the point of the Winchrite is that it is...

Re: Milwaukee 28 volt angle drill capstan system

The Winchrite unit is well designed and built for the marine environment. They are not cheap but they are head and shoulders above the right angle drill units. I got mine at Defender several years...

Re: Yanmar 3GM30F Preventative Maintenance

I think others have answered your question by now. Yes, it is the shaft that holds the pulley, bearings and impeller. The scoring damaged the seal and the pump leaked enough to trip the bilge pump.

Re: Yanmar 3GM30F Preventative Maintenance

My 3GM30F is 1990 vintage and we’ve had it for 24 years. Maintenance over the years included replacing hoses on a PM basis, replacing exhaust elbow, changing oil every year (regardless of low hours...

Re: Manual Head vs electric

We have a Lavac head that came with our 30 yr old Clearwater 35 when we acquired it 24 years ago. There’s nothing out there that is simpler or more foolproof.

Re: Lightning, and what to do about it

Just a note on the physics. When you electrify a conductor (mast, shrouds) at high voltage, there will be a sheath of ionized air (called a “corona”) created that will likely conduct many orders...

Re: Lightening, and what to do about it

We’ve had 2 lightning strikes: one was a side strike and the other was a direct strike (blew the VHF whip off the mast).

In the indirect hit, we noted that our VHF had inline fused on both wires...

Re: Best buffing compound for gelcoat?

As others have suggested, I would try an aggressive cleaner first. That would be one with a very mild abrasive. I have used Collinite cleaner and cleaner wax to remove marks from the white hull on...

Lightbulb Retracting centerboard/keel in heavy weather

My Clearwater 35 has a weighted swing keel (~3000#) which completely retracts from 5'11" draft to 1'10" draft. It is hauled via a winch-assisted block and tackle arrangement, but is lowered by...
