Re: Repair Bent Anchor?

It will lose some strength if you bend it back.

Consider replacing it with a much lighter Danforth Hi-tensile or Fortress anchor. These are much lighter and just as effective.

Re: Hypalon and Acetone

Nonflammable, nontoxic, effective, environmentally responsible. In the 1980s you could pick any two. Chemistry has improved so now you can pick any three.

2-Butoxyethanol is perhaps the...

Re: Hypalon and Acetone

MEK and acetone are not the same thing and while in the same family have considerably different properties. MEK generally has higher solvent power depending on the substance being dissolved. MEK...

Re: Frozeen turnbuckle

Use JB-80, it's twice as good. Says so right on the can so it must be true.

Seriously. WD-40 isn't particularly effective on frozen hardware. Use JB-80 or another good penetrating oil. Apply,...

Re: Charged after visiting a boat for sale! Has anyone ever had this happen?

Friends don't let friends buy charter boats. I'll add this to the list of reasons.

Re: New vs used

I was referring to the process of giving a list of deficiencies to be addressed to a boatyard, receiving an estimate, and having half the items fixed for twice the money originally estimated in three...

Re: New vs used

1) YouTube sailing channels are not real life, particularly not the popular ones. They are highly curated storytelling that is scripted and edited to draw and hold viewer attention. Good sailing...

Re: Glueing pump to hull

Also sold in smaller quantities as "devcon plastic welder." The stuff is great, faster cure than epoxy, inherently thicker, and less sensitive to surface preparation. I haven't tried it on aluminum...

Re: Glueing pump to hull

It can work. It helps if you prepare (with sandpaper) the surface immediately (minutes) before applying adhesive. I have a small bilge pump mounted that way on my 12' aluminum boat, and it's stayed...

Re: Dinghy Propeller Pitch - Who's experimented?

My advice would be to try a four-blade prop with the same pitch as your three-blade prop. And do get a tach, they're inexpensive and useful. I have one with a built-in hourmeter.

If you shop...

Re: Gate Valves - Care and Feeding Thereof

Actually with rising stem gate valves you can tell whether the gate is up or down by the position of the stem.

Re: Please (try to) avoid sailing/transiting through race courses

I see both sides on this, and there's nothing wrong with asking for awareness.

On the other hand, nobody owns the navigable waters, and it is often difficult to figure out what other vessels that...

Re: CO detectors, marine or regular model?

Other way around. The marine ones are less sensitive to avoid "false" alarms, particularly on boats using gasoline propulsion.

State of Minnesota requires the marine ones for compliance. (Few...

Re: Thoughts on Electric Winches?

My boat came with electric winches. The electric primaries are a great luxury. The electric halyard winch is a necessity with the furling boom that I have.

Main drawback is the overall...

You'll mostly be locking up so the locks will be filling, which is the more...

Re: Why would they alter the shape of the propane tank??

They're supposed to confirm the presence and integrity of the base ring before every fill.

5# cylinders are available from many sources.

Re: Why would they alter the shape of the propane tank??

A steel tank the same size will probably fit. They're the same diameter as the old 10# aluminum ones.

The aluminum ones are nicer, sure, lighter and longer lasting, but steel will work and you...

Re: GAM/McKim Split Lead Antenna

Re: AIS transceiver antenna spreader or stern?

Good advice upthread.

From a radio standpoint either location is good enough.

The real questions are practical and involve where the antenna will be in the way least. Can you get a halyard...
