Re: Most reasonably priced haul out facilities in the Caribbean?

St. Martin's is a hub for the marine trades in their part of the Caribbean. Parts for Antigua etc ship through St. Martin. Bobby's Marina is the major yard there. You might want to ask them for...

Late October to Bermuda??

I am contemplating leaving eastern LI (essentially Newport, RI) around Oct 21 for Bermuda. The thought would be to leave the boat in Bermuda for a month and then sail to the Caribbean in early Dec. ...

Re: Parking a boat in New England for a month or 2?

Try "Jack's Marine" in Shelter Island, NY for a reasonably priced mooring or Brewer's in Greenport, NY for hard or wet slips.

Re: What Would You Do? 26ft vs 34ft

One last thought. You asked "Do I really need 34 feet"? My answer is, if there is any way at all that you can afford it, yes. I am convinced that you will be much happier long term if you can pull...

Re: What Would You Do? 26ft vs 34ft

Hull speed is 1.35 x sqrt of the waterline length. So, guessing on some lwl - the 34 footer would have a hull speed around 7kt, while the 26 might be 5.6 or 5.7, so nominally close to 20 percent...

Re: What Would You Do? 26ft vs 34ft

I've had three boats in the past 40 years - a 33 foot wood sloop; a 37' Ericson and my current 52' Grand Soleil. I've raced on IOR 1/2 tonners, 1 tonners, 44' sloops & up as well as solings and...

Volvo TMD 31D

1996 Volvo TMD 31D for sale 100 hp (engine hours unknown, but based on history of the boat, they are unlikely to be excessive). Engine suffered a broken valve in a port and at a time where a...

Re: Want buy seaworthy boat for circumnavigation

If you look back in history an Ericson 37 made a successful circumnavigation. It has a reduced upwind sail plan and is built to go fast down wind. Much better performer than a Morgan OI. I happen...

Re: Exsisting Engine Or New

Hi. I offer up one additional issue to consider - it favors keeping your existing engine. New Yanmar engine clutches are not designed to prevent the prop from freewheeling by putting the engine in...

Re: No Hot Water

I've got a similar issue with a brand new, professionally installed Yanmar 4jh4-hte. Engine runs fine, but when I plumbed the hot water heater into the system - no antifreeze coolant flow to/from...

Re: Caribbean weather window

THX. Destination is nominally St. Maarten. Another option would be to take the boat to SC or Georgia in the fall & then to the Caribbean later, but this sounds like a lot of upwind work ("Gentlemen...

Caribbean weather window

I've been thinking about a transit from the US East Coast (Newport or Annapolis/Virginia Beach) to the Caribbean this fall, nominally departing around Nov 1. But now work commitments require...

Re: LED CONVERSION

Converted running lights to sealed LEDs (don't remember the brand). Expensive, but well worth it - 1000 hours or more since conversion; no issue.

Re: Gas stove

Further on your CNG stove - you may not need to replace it if you can refill the tank up & down the ICW. My brother-in-law works for the local gas company and gave me a pigtail that is supposed to...

Re: Gas stove

I've done it the other way. Propane to CNG. You will need to change out the burners on your stove as well as the tank/regulator. It's only slightly less expensive than replacing the entire stove,...

Re: Butane in the US

I did find a supplier in Northern Virginia who would fill my 14 lb tanks, but the price was ridiculously high (I seem to remember $140 a bottle). I also contacted the manufacturer of my stove and...

Agree with all of the above

Done both. Strongly recommend the inside route for the view and the overall experience unless you are way short of time. Keep an eye out for the currents as you can ride the flood/ebb cycle almost...
