Topsides Paint

My Northwind 50 needs a makeover and a decision has to be made about the paint to use. it's an expensive job whichever way you go so the pressure is on to get it right.

The brand leader continues...

Re: Checkin out of Spain, into France, Uk flag

I sailed from Gibraltar to the UK a few weeks ago visiting harbours and marinas along the way. Gib, Spain, Portugal, France, UK. The only concern was to see certificate of registry, passports and...

Re: Refuelling & Customs - Mediterranean

I think there may be different (easier) VAT regulations for vessels over a certain age. Best to check. Again, I suggest Cruising Association membership to get advice. They have all the info...

Re: Refuelling & Customs - Mediterranean

I came the other way last August/September and, although I was EU checked in, in none of the various harbours entered did anyone ask any silly questions. Only the restaurants (some) asked to see...

Re: spade or delta anchor vs fortress. any ideas for the adriatic?

My Spade with 80m of 3/8 high tensile chain held me in hurricane Ivan (in sand). But that was a mere 155 knots. Well, maybe more but the anemometer blew away!

Re: Float charging Lithium

Thanks for your advice, Tanglewood. I think there is a real benefit on a boat having a low voltage (13.4 ish) charge continuously connected. While at sea, and using power, it allows the batteries...

Re: Float charging Lithium

Thanks Franziska, and T1 for your thoughtful and informed response.
T1 your interpretation of my set-up is correct. The cells do not display a brand, doubtless Chinese, but they seem well made. my...

Float charging Lithium

My Lead Acids were ruined being uncharged over my two year Covid absence (in a yard which did not allow power on board) so I decided to replace with Lithium. All seems fine with two Lithium banks...

I am installing six 100 Amp LiFePo4 batteries each comprised of four prismatic cells. I want to run a bow thruster rated at 450 Amps for occasional 10 second bursts which is well below 1C (the cells...

Re: Reducing “coning “ in the chain locker -ideas ?

I use a traffic cone for my 80m chain/80m nylon and it works well. Point of the cone must be right under the chain drop. Doesn't cost much to give it a try!

Lithium with Thruster (again!)

My lead acid batteries have been neglected and uncharged in a med boatyard and I expect are pretty well dead. (Their insurers won't allow mains power unattended charging.) So I propose to replace...

Re: So walk me through the in-mast furling mainsail

In boom every time. Better batten control. Better sail shape. Any bad trouble? Let go or cut the main halyard! Although in all my miles I have never had to. If in doubt, furl.
I use the...

Re: Can I use Sterling External Regulator with standard 115A alternator charging lith

You might look at the Balmar MC - 614 regulator and adjust it for Lithium and also the Sterling Pro-Protect if your BMS might cut the feed-line.

Control of power going into Lithiums

The Electrodacus BMS units look a smart bit of kit (electrodacus.com). But they are focussed on controlling solar. Are there reasons why not to use, say, their SBMS 120 or several of them to...

Re: Best time for Greece - Saronic Gulf

Perna is right. July, and August, in particular, are likely to be windy, possibly very windy (force 7). If you only have one week then the Saronic might be a risk.

If you really want to sail in...
