Re: Hokule'a

I'd like to understand more too.
I remember the now late David Lewis (first circum in a cat; Icebird etc) did a lot of research on this kind of navigation. I suspect he would have tried it, and...

Re: Writing about sailing adventures - and the stuff learned?!

Funny...!
Mark is a counter puncher, comedian, smartarse, master of the one liner, all round hell of a nice guy with a ton of experience, and no doubt a graduate of the Australian college of...

Re: Writing about sailing adventures - and the stuff learned?!

I think Mark J nailed it, as he usually does.
When he completed his circum he said "I'm going to be the first one to do a circumnavigation and NOT write a book about it..."

Re: Writing about sailing adventures - and the stuff learned?!

We completed a circum last year and kept a blog going for family and friends. I was surprised at how many people followed it and enjoyed getting emails out of the blue from total strangers. I've had...

Re: Hokule'a

That thought crossed my mind too, particularly with the stars of the Southern hemisphere to go by.
I would guess they'd have the benefit of knowing Australia was coming up and how to use the...

Re: Hokule'a

On the day they left St Helena the anchorage was in the lee and the cliffs are massive. But clear of the anchorage there was a reasonable southeaster, so the ketch towed them out.
I don't think the...

Re: Mallorca to Israel on 20.6.17

We could be interested but maybe not a practical option for you. We're a couple in Australia so flights would cost a bit, but we have the sea miles (recent circum), Sandy is a great cook, both clean,...

Re: Which CatI& Year will replace my house.

That front porch has always struck me as a great feature at anchor and not a problem for short hops between islands. I'd be worried doing ocean crossings.

Re: Hokule'a

We met up with them in St Helena. Nice guys. They change crew from time to time but I think the skipper and definitely the navigator did the whole trip. Not many have the old navigation skills. The...

Re: 1st year on Lagoon 380

Hi,
Congratulations on your first year, and by now you're probably well into your second.
We're toying with the idea of buying a Lagoon 380 in the Med. Probably at the cheaper end so most likely ex...

Re: Lucky fish

I've just come across this thread and assume there are links to youtube clips of Lucky Fish?
Just wonddring is this the same Lucky Fish cat we saw in St Helena about 18 months ago?
They'd sailed...

Re: Looking for 40-50' Bluewater Monohull Sailboat <$200k

You could take a look at Wind Wanderer, but might be bigger than you want to go.

Thanks Don,
I'd hardly know where to start.
We used to have a section at the bottom of our posts and I had the link to our website/blog there,
But I don't see it now.
Try this ...

Thanks Jim,
You and Ann have always been a great inspiration to us, and I'm sure many others.
It would be great to catch up again, maybe on your way back down.
We're freezing our butts up on top...

Long Time No Sea

It's been a while since I've checked in to the forum, which is a bit sad given the huge amount of info and help we got while getting Wind Wanderer set up for cruising in 2012/2013. I guess we went...

Re: Engineless anyone?

We lost our transmission sailing from Namibia (Africa) to St Helena and almost ended up on the rocks while grabbing a mooring there. We stayed there for a few months hoping to find a solution, but...

Re: Comprehensive List of Cats Available?

We're cruising the South African coast at the moment and are in Knysna lagoon, not far from Cape St Francis. We have been amazed at the number of great cats being built here, many we've never heard...

Re: ITALIAN TOURISTS VISITING ON A YACHT, ABUSED IN FIJI.

Re: How big is too big?

We ended up with a bigger boat than we intended, 54 ft on deck, 60 something with bowsprit and davits, and at 30 tons she's a hefty lump, but she never feels too big on the ocean or at anchor, only...

Re: Pilothouse Boats -- Again

If you live aboard permanently a pilothouse is great for light, space etc. We wouldn't be without it. But we don't have a pilothouse helm and don't need it because we have a hard dodger, making our...

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

Well, I can tell you what happens to some wannabees... they sail off and become 'havetobees'. So pretty important to be really sure you wannabee.
I've been surprised to see how many people we've...

Re: Sailmaker in Bundaberg?

Hi Jim,
Thanks for that tip.
I've spoken to Port Canvass and he certainly seems to know his stuff, and concurs with you in that they ALWAYS do their own measuring on board.

The sail that ripped...
