Re: PSS Failure on only one shaft

Put a zinc on the shaft as a stop. 10 years is the life of a bellows. Change it out.

Re: 10 year standing rigging, why?

Fiber rigs are not 75% lighter than a standard rig, only the wire or rope portions are lighter. This is often misunderstood.
.
If a complete rig is 500# , (lights, Radome, and all), ...

Re: Severe pain, what would you do if single handing?

Single handing at sea, for more time than you can stay awake and on watch, is against International law, for a good reason. We must be on watch 24/7.

Otherwise, when a skipper is seasick, and...

Re: Dyneema Thermal Expansion - Enough to Break Things?

The issue is whether or not you have a tune sensitive rig. Dyneema does not expand or contract like SS wire does. It does so, but FAR less.
If your Dyneema rig is tuned perfectly for 90°F+, then...

Re: Velox Plus prop antifoul paint

AS A TWO SEASON FOLLOWUP ON VELUX...
I maxed out the perfect prep, following instructions, calling the dealer with questions, etc. This Velux product on my drive train failed 100% within a month,...

Re: Pros and Cons of folding props

The Flex O Fold, as I have used for 27 years, is massively built, and there are redundant safeties engineered in. If it is installed right, the odds of it losing parts is "0".

In fact... because...

Re: Pros and Cons of folding props

On a fast boat, absolutely worth having a "folding" prop, like Flex O Fold.
These are geared, and in forward, more efficient than fixed. The additional maintenance is minimal.

On our triamran,...

Re: Radar or AIS to rouse me when in a stupor?

This is, imo, a no brainer.
No technology relieves us of our ethical and legal requirement to stand watch 24/7. We all have the right to assess and take our own risks, but not to decide on the...

Re: Rio Dulce

I went to the Dry Tortugas to wait for best conditions. Then sailed for Cuba, staying "just" outside of their limits... and follow their coast around the end.
Then turn right for isla Mujeras, and...

Re: Adding copper powder to antifouling

Don't do it! Been tried for 30 years, and none of the dozens of attempts worked well, if at all. Some attract hard growth because the coating conducts minute electricity, around the drive train....

Re: Mast base flange. How to fit deck curvature?

This is the same for mounting hatches or anything flat, on a curved deck.

Make a FLAT 3/4” plywood mast base duplicate, and cover it with 3M 471 blue plastic tape, including up the edge, as a mold...

Re: What can I spray a touch up job of 2 part linear polyurethane with?

If it is real LP like AwlGrip, (vs AwlCraft Acrylic) it can only be touched up if you picture frame it with masking and paper.

You can not polish out overspray, like with AwlCraft.
The shine is...

Re: 3 blades folding props on a Volvo D1-30

The Flexofold in forward gear, is the most efficient prop made. Not so in reverse, but good enough.

While sailing, the Flexofold blades trail back so that they will not snag crab pots.
In...

Re: Convert from solid drive shaft to u-joint

It has two U joints connected with a telescopic...

Re: Velox Plus prop antifoul paint

I have painted the SS rudder gudgeon and pintles in the past, using Petitts two part pink primer. It is...

Re: What Is the Best Anti-Fouling Bottom Paint

Bummer... we are on the hard now, in a 25th year refit, and removing decades of paint CAREFULLY, as our self built 34' Searunner wood/epoxy tri has no gel coat as a backup to the paint. We have not...
