Re: insane marina charge

People want to get paid more than they are worth.

It probably took 3 times longer than it should and $150 an hour is not a reasonable rate, I would say $15 an hour for that type of work for 17...

Re: Charts for Vanuatu and Solomon Islands

I have scanned paper charts for many countries including vanuatu, but I would say the detail is not very high compared to what you are used to and the charts themselves 20-30 years old.

Your best...

Re: Newcomer question - how to begin?

in 15 years, society will begin to actually collapse and cruising may not be possible at least not in most places the way it is now for most people. Not sure its a good idea to wait that long. ...

re: Collision and Dismasting

I recently collided with a cargo ship. I was doing 8 knots of speed to 0 knots in a split second. Everything in the boat violently thrown forward. Was 12 miles from land. Are ships supposed to...

Re: Dyneema rig goes slack in the cold??? Not for me!!

i use dyneema rigging and he is not correct to say you cant sail with it slack.

You can sail just fine with it slack unlike stainless which will work harded from repeated shock loading and...

Re: Electric Foreigner - a catamaranEP converson project

regen would work poorly because the propeller is not cambered for it, the efficiency (power vs drag) is half what it should be.

You should instead seriously consider a dedicated hydro generator...

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.0 Released

I am working on my plugins for 5.8.

I have found some issues in the handling of nmea messages with plugins I am trying to resolve, so even if you get the plugin working the core opencpn needs a...

Re: A solution for derelict boats!

The police cannot ID someone without reasonable articulate suspicion that the person has committed is committing or is about to commit a crime.

You must hate the constitution and want to deny...

Re: interesting failure- dyneema rig terminal

This is an example of what not to do with synthetics and tangs and how to correct it. It is very useful to see these types of failures to understand the limits and avoid making the same mistakes.

Re: interesting failure- dyneema rig terminal

You mean the bolt needed more tension? I am not sure this makes sense.

What does seem obvious is how far out the outer shrouds connected on the bolt giving them a lot of leverage. To make this...

Re: interesting failure- dyneema rig terminal

I find this failure very interesting.

On my own boat, I have 2 bolts, one for forward lowers, the other for rear lowers.

Both have compression pipes as well. There is compression of...

Re: Prop for Electric Motor

This seems like a minimal voltage to work with. I would have suggested 120vdc as lots of appliances can run off ac or dc so you could run power tools heater etc without an inverter. You can even...

Re: heaving to vs lying ahull

I respectfully disagree with you. You said "gale" not sure what this is. Have you navigated in a full storm? your U warp from the stern isnt enough. 6-7 knots is not really slow enough...

Re: heaving to vs lying ahull

I just got some cones from ocean brake and they were hemmed. They were also made of dacron instead of nylon. They weigh twice as much as the non-hemmed cones made of ripstop nylon.

Re: Boiling water efficiently

The loss is not as much as you think. A typical alcohol stove uses the least amount of fuel if boiling water in 30 minutes even though most are designed to do so in 5-10 minutes. This is with a...

Re: New Menaces to Navigation?

Re: Drinking Water from watertanks

I've been living onboard since 2011. Never used a water tank: never want to. Never used bleach.

Re: Boiling water efficiently

It looks nice but a high price.. but it does not run on DC. I am looking for something that uses DC power. I do not have an inverter. Everything I have runs without inverters, and this would...

Is this a voyage catamaran?

I have only a single rudder on my trimaran but I also have a sculling oar which can steer the boat in emergencies.

I am not sure it ever did happen... at least...

Re: Bargain boats: hurricane-damaged, long-forgotten, what have you

If the boat is worth anything you should be able to sail it to turkey without concern. It is better to refit in florida.

Consider that florida is a very hot humid environment and any boat that...

The ones I find all have teflon and other toxic coatings.

Re: Is rain no longer potable?

This is about "forever chemicals" that do not break down and bio-accumulate, certainly not any type of toxin.
