Re: Hunter 40

I have no idea where any of you got the idea that I think ALL production boats are low quality, poorly manufactured, today or in the past.
There a hundreds of manufacturers out there that really...

Re: Hunter 40

Don Lucas,
You and I have gone round and round on this one before and it’s interesting that while I comment on Hunters specifically and other poor quality (IMO, of course) production boats you, on...

Re: Hunter 40

OK, you guys got me! I meant force 12, but hey, you are absolutely right, I am wrong and stupid and ignorant and I'll shut up now.

Re: Hunter 40

And just how many folks who read these forums do YOU think have anywhere near the experience and seamanship to equal Bligh or Shackleton? Get a grip.
Bligh was sailing master on Cook's voyages...

Re: Ventilation in Aft Cabins/Center Cockpit

Please explain to me how the dorade in this pic could possibly exhaust air.
No matter how you apply aerodynamics, won't any outgoing air really be from the water drain holes? Ours have fairly large...

Re: Ventilation in Aft Cabins/Center Cockpit

So every time you anchor, you're going to take the dorade box apart and modify it, then do it again before you sail? Let's be a little realistic here.
By the way, a dorado is a fish.

Re: Ventilation in Aft Cabins/Center Cockpit

I repeat; you cannot exhaust air through a dorade box. There is no direct connection between the funnel and the through deck fitting and the dorade box itself has holes to allow any water that enters...

Re: Thoughts on Deck Strategy

When I acquired Seafarer the PO had uncovered her wood decks, thinking they were teak. They were pine with tar/pitch caulking! Not a good for bare decks in the tropics.
After considerable research,...

Re: Through Hull-Valve Broken or Not-Broken?

The crack you are looking at is NOT a break; it is to dismantle the valve.
That said it IS NOT A PROPER SEACOCK and should be removed from the boat immediately. It is a gate valve. A seacock has a...

Re: Cheoy Lee offshore 40

Funny how things go. A few hours ago we watched an offshore 40 anchor near us in Admiralty Bay, Bequia.
I've known the boats since they first came to the west coast. Very well built and designed for...

Re: how robust are gimbaled radar mast mounts

Everyone I've talked to down here in the Caribbean who has one hates them for a variety of reasons. I had considered one for my second radar, but they were too pricey and now I'm glad I didn't spend...

Re: Flag Registration

St. Lucia has become a very popular place to register a yacht these days. They are very accommodating and friendly and from my understanding, very cheap, though I have not checked out the prices....

Re: Best Way To Go: Rebuild or Ready to Go

I'm sorry, but I have no experience with this type of boat, which is what you really wanted to know. That said, there are a few things you might want to consider.
Boat building and turning houses...

Re: Steel over GRP !!!

But make sure you also get a liferaft. Then when you hit something hard in the middle of the night - container, reef, another boatie etc- and the sea rushes in thru the gaping hole, you'll be able to...

Re: Top 5 Regrets of the Dying.

I just have one question; what risk?
Oh, you mean stubbing your toe on that same cleat, AGAIN!
Sailing has to be the safest physical sport on earth. Even ocean sailing. With the millions of sailors...

Re: Best Anchor in South Pacific

I remember an amazing lagoon area in New Caledonia, Isle of Pines if I remember right, that might fit your needs to a T. A good distance from Noumea, and yet within the reef.
Here in the Caribbean,...

Re: Steel over GRP !!!

Yeah, tell that to the captain of the Titanic!

IMO it's really simple for the average cruiser; do you want to work on your boat or sail it?

Re: Ventilation in Aft Cabins/Center Cockpit

Dorades will not exhaust air. Open one and look; no direct connection between funnel and through deck tube.
As mentioned above, wind scoops won't work w/o an air exit.

Re: Basic Hand Tools

Jared,
Not to be rude, but what do you know of that's still made in the USA? Even my Onan generator has a Kubota engine!
I'm guessing that SAE will go the way of the gooney bird and Pontiac in the...

Re: Ventilation in Aft Cabins/Center Cockpit

We have some problem with the ventilation in our aft cabin. With a large hatch, 4 opening portholes and 2 dorades the aft section (aft of the hatch and ports) still has no airflow. Hot air just sits...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

I'm sorry, but even I have to agree with the general consensus.
Had it been a Searunner 31, then maybe it might have been worth the effort, but this is a first generation tri and really not worth...

Re: 32' JOHN BROWN SAIL TRI W/NO MOTOR...

I sailed a Brown 37' half way round the world and in no uncertain terms would I hesitate to recommend one of those to anyone. I know the 31'er, but not the 32' boat so I'm not sure if it's a 31' that...

Re: NADA vs. YachtWorld - Grrrrrrr

I would highly recommend chuck@emeraldyachtship.com. He acted as my "buyer's agent" at no cost to me including his flight from Chicago to NYC and did a wonderful job FOR ME, not the seller.
Mention...

Re: Freighters vs. sailboats

Just when did it become the responsibility of anyone other than the operator of a vessel to supply colregs to everyone, in any language?
It is the responsibility of the operator of EVERY vessel to...

Re: A Good Safe Passage Maker

Well, there sure are a lot of different thoughts on this one.
Learning sailing before fiberglass boats were common, I'd have lost the bet that those soulless, foul smelling plastic bottles would...
