Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

I think what I'll do is to check out sailing clubs and small keel sailboats on sale around at the time. I have to get off-line now; the more I surf the Net, the more spec requirements I will come up...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

I love the traditional looks of the old long keels. Cape Dory 27 is a lovely example. There is some sort of romantism in them.

Agreed with the LIS option. That's what I'll do. Sailing to NY Harbor...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

J22, Cal22 and Capri22 are the winners so far. Although, what boats will be available when I am actually in the market is another story.

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

:)

It was a joke. 'Less than 11k - 12k' is a concern considering the future sailboats for singlehanded purposes, something let's say, 35 - 38 ft. I mentioned that as the ones I look for now...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

I also have more specs requirements for singlehanded learning in regard to D/L, SA/D, Ballast ratio, and over all displacement. But I don't even bring them up as they would make it too hard to find...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

Its keel is not that deep either. Still, it will be a good boat for me. I would pick a J22 over it though.

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

There is always a Catalina 22 on sale somewhere. They are like Corollas. :)

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

Catalina 22 breaks many rules of mine, but what do I know. I can only know the numerous articles I've read about rigs - and that knowledge doesn't mean that much until I sail both masthead and...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

Thanks man for pointing to that. I've been learning a lot from your posts.

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

Sorry, I mixed up Sonar and Soling in my mind earlier. I edited and fixed the comment. Yes, Sonar seems like a good option too.

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

I don't know if Cal22 cockpit is self-bailing.

I mentioned about Cape Dory as a joke, of course.

I've never heard about Sonar. I will check it out. For a moment, I read it like Soling. :)

I...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

I picked Cal 22 as an example because other than the rudder, it puts a check on every box in the specs I seek - and its transom hung rudder is better than many spade rudder designs.
Sa/Disp: close...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

I've decided not to do that with my first keel sailboat; with the first one, I will stay in LIS. I will leave that passage for a future / bigger sailboat - when I have enough experience. Still, it...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

I don't know if Cal22 has self-bailing cockpit.
If I buy something 22 ft then I will only sail in LIS; I won't sail it to Ny Harbor.
Cal 22 is just an example to express my thoughts. Here are my...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

Yes, around NYC is expensive. I also would hate to jump into the water when necessary around NY Harbor. I think I should sail only on LIS with gas outboard, tiller. Maybe a 28 ft? You've made good...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

LIS is where I'm interested but I want to be able to sail to NY harbor too when I feel like. Maybe I should forget about that with the first keel sailboat. I start to think something like Cal22 in...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

By the way, I want to sail single-handedly. Deep fin keel, spade rudder, fractional sloop. Preferably tiller. Perhaps an inboard diesel would be a better idea. These are what I learned in the light...

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

I even think about sailing between NY Harbor and LIS. Bad plan? Possibly not a good idea in a Cal22, but maybe a Catalina 27?

Re: Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

For example, will a Call22 be too small, let's say for NY Harbor?

Day Sailers for New York Harbor and Long Island Sound?

I had some sailing-dinghy experience in my younger days. Want to get back into water. Not on a dinghy this time. I want to start with a keel sailboat.

What are the best day sailers or weekenders...
