Re: Remove the alternator - crazy idea?
Seems like a good approach for now. Once they're cooked you can upgrade as needed...;-) |

Re: Remove the alternator - crazy idea?
The vast majority of the LFP installations we've done or seen UPGRADE the alternator, along with adding a smart regulator that communicates with the battery system. Most often, the whole idea of... |

Re: Balmar alternator fire
The only real way to put an alternator in to flaming mode is to have it open-circuited from the load (batteries). That's almost certainly what happened (have seen it before). And the fact that no... |

Re: Solbian All-in-One
Hi Folks, The Solbian AiO panels are great for simple installations, as they can be connected directly to the batteries. However, the AiO integrated controllers are not programmable, and the... |

Re: FireFly Battery Notes II
Sure! Btw, it's a good idea to have voltage temperature compensation from ambient temps near the batteries. So that in warmer ambient temps the voltage is cut back some. Firefly says it's ok for... |

Re: FireFly Battery Notes II
It's fairly universal for all battery mfgs to recommend a limit in charging current. Pitfalls of charging too fast can be overheating, excessive gassing, the increasing chances of internal... |

Re: FireFly Battery Notes II
From the Firefly manual: "Max Charge Current: The max recommended continuous charge rate is 0.5C but 1C can be tolerated for sporadic charge sessions. Frequently charging at 1C will negatively... |

Re: Why are flexible solar panels catching fire?
Although those were cheap panels, they do have an excuse to not honor any warranty due to the installation over the bars. |

Re: Why are flexible solar panels catching fire?
You are correct, in the case of 3+ panels in a series string (2+ can backfeed into the wiring for a 3rd panel). However as I understand it, this fusing only protects the wiring up to any particular... |

Re: Why are flexible solar panels catching fire?
You're talking about internal panel wiring, not about external fusing. And this is why higher grade panels have several built in bypass diodes to prevent back feeding not only from additional panels... |

Re: Why are flexible solar panels catching fire?
Interesting. Can you provide an explanation of how the fuse will blow? |

Re: Why are flexible solar panels catching fire?
The fuse will never blow. The only power source on the panel side of the controller is the panel. The most current it will ever produce is when it's functioning properly. Really shouldn't... |

Re: Why are flexible solar panels catching fire?
With those cheap 100W panels, there are no built-in bypass diodes to limit the flow of current into bad and/or cracked cells. However in defense of the panel it's obvious that the cells were... |

Re: Balmar 614 vs Li battery BMS cutout
Li3 isn't doing much in the way of small batteries anymore. Some are shown on the website however they aren't made except for volume orders. However, the new GTX12V315A-E2107-CS200 (315Ah x 12.8V)... |

Re: Balmar 614 vs Li battery BMS cutout
Do the Li3 Batteries communicate with the Wakespeed via Canbus or some other bus to disconnect the Alterator Filed? Yes. The Li3 BMS and the Wakespeed speak the same CANbus (RV-C). And in... |

Re: Balmar 614 vs Li battery BMS cutout
IMHO, different horses for different courses. With lower current charging sources, and/or smaller alternators, the Battleborn may work fine. A Sterling APD might save the alternator in a cutoff. ... |

Re: Balmar 614 vs Li battery BMS cutout

Re: Celebrity Sailors--Who would you have liked to Sail with
Good choice! I did some regattas on Santana and a friend of mine got married on the boat on SF Bay. Magical boat, and to sail on with Bogart would have been great. |

Re: Celebrity Sailors--Who would you have liked to Sail with
Great thread. I'm lucky enough to have sailed with some of the esteemed names mentioned. Back in my West Coast days I raced again Stan Honey often, however I don't think we actually ever sailed... |
