Re: Solo sailor needs help

Another tip for napping while sailing solo: In Europe, where solo ocean racing is much more common than the US, we often saw boats on AIS with their name "Solo Sailor <boat name>". The idea was that...

2020 Boreal 52

After 14 years of voyaging, we've decided it's time for a new chapter, and will sell our terrific 2020 Boreal 52. Just back from Labrador, she's in fantastic shape, fully optioned, loads of spares,...

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

Saw this early mini Transat boat in a small marina in Brittany. All of this rot and corrosion is painted on, trompe leil style! I walked by it several times thinking they were actual holes!

Re: Freezer War

Mark, we have 2 Vitrifrigo single drawer freezers, and a double drawer fridge. The fridge energy consumption seems ok. But the freezers are another story. Even in Northern Europe the compressors...

Re: PSS shaft seal adjustment

Mark. I tried the teflon tape, and it seems to be working at stopping the leaks from the screw holes. Cool!

If we weren't at a marina with a shipyard (with an 820 TON (!!!) travel lift), I'd...

Re: PSS shaft seal adjustment

Thanks, Jim. I'd thought about uw epoxy, but really didn't want to lock the screw in too tight (it's only a small allen key, which can be easily stripped if too much torque is needed to loosen), or...

Re: PSS shaft seal adjustment

Excellent idea. . I had a similar thought, and had tried using a glob of the blue locktite that I had at hand. But of course it couldn’t work, since there was water in the hole. A bit of Teflon tape...

Re: PSS shaft seal adjustment

The drip rate out of the screw holes actually increased after I removed the four set screws and compressed the bellows a bit more. So I think the lock tite was acting as a bit of a thread sealant as...

PSS seal, o-ring specs for 35mm shaft?

I've been fighting a leak w/ my PSS seal since the new boat was launched nearly 2 years ago. Mfr kept saying it was "normal" and would go away as the carbon disk broke in. I knew this was BS from...

Re: PSS shaft seal adjustment

I'm also having a leak w/ my PSS seal. I'd always assumed that it was at the interface of the 2 disks. Today I again tried to compress the bellows. I discovered that the leak is not at the...

Re: NMEA 2K link for Volvo....question:

Thanks Doug. That’s what I expected. I’ll look at adding a tee to the oil pressure sender port so I can keep the old one to keep the damn MDI happy while adding a 2nd for a proper gauge. Wouldn’t...

Re: NMEA 2K link for Volvo....question:

Will do. And if anyone else knows the easiest way to get oil pressure data on nmea2k, I’m all ears. I assume it would require replacing or adding a different sender than the idiot alarm Volvo sender?...

Re: NMEA 2K link for Volvo....question:

OTT, our VP link only transmits sentences for rpm, coolant temp, and hours. I wish it gave oil pressure as well, but I’m led to believe that this may require an additional sender and nmea2k...

Re: Alternator for new Volvo engine?

Hi Upspeed
The final solution that Volvo agreed to warranty was:

Install Mastervolt 130A/12V alternator in the standard alternator position, with serpentine belt.
This is regulated by their...

Re: What do you use to lift a dinghy with davits?

We also use our primary winches. We happen to have electric primaries, which makes it very easy. But if we had manual winches it wouldn't be hard to do at all. And as others have said, you could...

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

Came across this beauty at the dock in little Treguier on the Brittany coast last year. Rumor was that it was an early mini-Transat entry from long ago. The paint job was amazing trompe l'oeil...

Re: Galley countertops

It was custom, and a first for Boreal. They had it done by an outside shop. I saw that on their new 47.2 they included the SS galley on the company demo boat, and it got good reviews in the judging...

Re: Galley countertops

We've been very happy with stainless steel galley tops....easy to keep clean, especially with integral sinks, and you can put hot things down on them without worry. And, they go well with brushed...

Re: Freezer Only Aboard?

We find that the need for freezer vs fridge varies by our circumstances. While voyaging, both long passages and living in remote areas for long periods, the freezer has been most important. We use...

Best anti torsion rope for top down?

Sailmaker has admitted the anti torsion line is too long, and...

Re: 3/8 BBB or 3/8 G4 HT dilemma

The shackle pin that goes through the chain link doesn't care whether or not it's a bow or standard shackle shape. It's just a pin. Sometimes the bow shape does fit the anchor side better.

Re: 3/8 BBB or 3/8 G4 HT dilemma

Good idea, Chris. Would accomplish the same thing as the oversized link, and allows use of random cut ends on the chain.

Re: 3/8 BBB or 3/8 G4 HT dilemma

Regardless of chain size or grade, be sure to always specify with an “oversized link” at each end. This will allow you to use a shackle which better matches the strength of the chain. If you don’t do...
