Re: Sterilizing water in developing countries

Please note that if your bottle of bleach has been shaken and thus mixed with air then the hypochlorite has to a significant extent been oxidized into non-active compounds. And not all things sold...

Re: Sterilizing water in developing countries

It all depends on what you are concerned about. Chlorine is quite decvent, but if you are concerned about Cryptosporidium then you will have to increase concentration until it tastes rather bad (the...

Re: ‘We feel truly alive’ - Observer article about the newest crop of liveaboards.

Of course, a replacement sail, outboard, standing/running rigging, a furler, winch, etc would break that budget, but as the cost for feeding myself? Perfectly doable.

Re: ‘We feel truly alive’ - Observer article about the newest crop of liveaboards.

Not having been to Mallorca, but here in Sweden -- well known as one of the cheapest countries in the world (not) -- I could eat on a "student budget" for about that a day (rice/pasta/potatoes,...

Re: MOB safe options

When out kayaking I have a PLB on my PFD, with the lanyard attached to the shoulder strap. Kayaking I'm not really doing long passages, a few nautical miles at most, and I wear a dry suit if the...

Re: Web log for following trip

There are a bunch of free blogging platforms. Depending on your tech style and abilities anything from wordpress.com by way of GitHub pages to a self hosted blog platform could work. Link in a map...

Re: Is rain no longer potable?

Actually, modern analytical techniques are surprisingly capable. For example, if they analyzed the contents of your septic tank they could tell if (and what) drugs you were using aboard your boats....

Re: Ramp slippery - I know this but still fell - ouch

Just watch out for any sign of infection. If you see any: see a doctor quick, since antibiotics, despite our best efforts, still mostly work it is unlikely to be the cause of your demise.

Re: Outboards are incredibly polluting - WOW

That depends on the local power systems. Sweden for example is almost all hydro and nuclear, with an increasing proportion of wind, and almost no fossil fuel. Other places have different systems, and...

Re: What are your favorite InReach Preset messages to use?

Depends on your recipient. It is quite possible to build a logic tree such that two of them read (e.g.)

1. (Stopping here) OR (yes/positive to your question)
2. (Starting from here now) OR...

Re: 50 Must Have's

I first encountered this problems solving strategy quite a few decades ago when veteran of a life in the mountains told me the steps in fording a river: first step as making a cup of coffee. Gave you...

Re: Plastics Pollution in Our Oceans . . .

That is the big problem with long term problems like climate change: they spend decades being "important but less urgent than...", and now is is larger and more important: fairly minor adjustments...

Re: Looking for a $10k liveable Sailboat

Here in Sweden you can find an old Albin Vega or Havsfidra for between 2-10k$, probably an ok Folkbot in the upper range of that. The Havsfidra is small, slow and built like a tank. They probably...

Re: Garmin inReach

I suggest doing the math on the different plans, both the monthly and annual versions. It boils down to "how chatty are you?" and "how many tracking points do you want to have?", and figuring out...

Re: Back Clip Safey Harness

When I did my swift water rescue training we got to test hanging from a line in swift water: if you hold it tight against your chest and let it pass over your shoulder you will be reasonably ok

Re: Back Clip Safey Harness

There are systems used on swift water rescue PFDs, and such a system would be great for this. Basically a seat belt webbing strap that is threaded through loops on the PFD (and sewn on the buckle end...

Re: Denmark and Sweden: 6-8 Weeks: Recommendations?

The archipelago is nice: tons of little islands. If you make up as far as just north of Sundsvall (halfway up Sweden) you have Höga Kusten (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Coast) (The High Coast)...

Re: Special Blue Water Cruiser Ready To Take You Anywhere You Want
