Re: Atlantic Crossing - Clearwater, FL, USA to Cork, Ireland in t-minus three weeks

Thanks, Hoodsail.

In my post, I wasn't talking about me, but I do appreciate your sending that advice, as I appreciate your arrangements for crew.

Re: Atlantic Crossing - Clearwater, FL, USA to Cork, Ireland in t-minus three weeks

I dunno, man. Shared food expenses...

I get it when the plan is a leisurely cruise in the Bahamas or something.

But crossing the Atlantic can be challenging, hard work. You aren't paying for...

Re: Realistic video of waves

Ooh! This problem vexes me as well!

I've tried a few things.

One is to try to show the wave looming over the (bored) captain's head, as seen below, 60 m east of Savannah, Ga., where the...

Re: Booze underway

Recently, in some remote port, I ran into a guy who was solo circumnavigating. He averred that, when he is becalmed for days, rather than crank up the engine, he dials up the edibles. As for me, no,...

Re: So how cold does it get off South Africa in summer?

Didn't notice the smell. The seals don't smell great, and they'll climb right up onto your swim platform if you let them. In Cape Town, twice we had sea otters crawl into the cockpit (and once tickle...

Re: So how cold does it get off South Africa in summer?

Walvis Bay, Namibia: Cool by day, cooler at night, no whales (despite the name, derived from the German for "Whale Bay"), tons of seals.

It didn't get warm and summery until we passed St. Helena,...

So how cold does it get off South Africa in summer?

For anyone interested, I’m answering my own question. YMMV

Richards Bay: Jan 8-10: hot, dry, warm water

East London Jan 12-13: I put on my jacket and got rained on. Water temp was 16 until we...

And I'm off to SA!!

Thank you to all of you who've answered. Lots of good tidbits and advice throughout.

The cold-not-frigid gear got packed.

I think I'll resurrect this thread when I'm back with my own answers,...

Just the temperature, folks.

Thanks, Brian. A great list.

My question was which temperatures at sea I'm preparing for on that route, not how to prepare for various temperatures at sea.

However, I always and sincerely...

Richards Bay to Cape Town: I have my answer.

Ohp!

Episode 125, she's wearing a knit wool cap and an offshore jacket with several layers underneath.

:thumb:

I've got my answer. Thanks!

Richards Bay to Cape Town in summer: Temperatures?

Thanks, MicHughV. I appreciate and endorse the above sentiment wholeheartedly.

The topographical problem of this (world famous) coastline I am aware of, as well as the unpredictable and fickle...

Re: Who has sailed Cape Town to the Caribbean? I have a question for you

The scope of the voyage has now changed, as we are starting from Richards Bay. From what I've read/heard, I think I'll bring those work boots and layers after all.

True, thank you.

Although, where's the fun in that? I come to CF for the anecdotes...

Who has sailed Cape Town to the Caribbean? I have a question for you

Hello everyone, particularly those of you who have crossed the South Atlantic from Cape Town to the Caribbean.

I'm preparing to join a boat finishing a circumnavigation for the passage Cape Town...

Re: French sailboat, with four crew on board, sunk following interaction with orcas

In addition, orcas are actually dolphins.

So, instead of comparing them to such bucolic giants as humpbacks or finbacks, consider thinking of a juvenile orca as Flipper on steroids, with...

Last one: The Slip from Beneath Hell

You can see the dimensions of this slip in the two photos.

The wind is blowing you onto those pilings. Note how they don't just line up with the finger slip; they actually curve into the fairway....

That video is excellent!

I have definitely witnessed right whales this close (I called the hotline and backed off) but never filmed like this.

Humpbacks we still have in abundance, as well as...
