Re: Should I Buy a New Main ?

^^^^^ This! ^^^^^

Also, your halyard might be "all the way up" but it does not look NEARLY tight enough.

Re: 12v Boat with 24v bow thruster

Why on earth would you EVER want to do that?

There is never a need to run a bow thruster while pulling the anchor (or dropping it for that matter!) and the potential for a disastrous wrap around...

Re: Can I move my 38-foot boat with an outboard?

I once saw somebody moving a 27 foot sailboat by towing it while swimming.

So CAN you make a Sabre 38 MOVE with a 6hp outboard? Sure.

Is it a realistic option for a long distance cruise? ...

Re: Expected Chain Lifespan

wsmurdoch,

How much, exactly, is a "small amount"? And how would you KNOW you had exceeded the WLL by this amount (and no more)?

I haven't seen a cruising boat with a strain gauge...

Re: Crossing gulf stream with north wind

Having crossed the gulf stream at least 6 times a year for the last 6 years, and sailed north using the stream for days at a time, I really have to wonder what the big deal is. So much angst... so...

Re: Expected Chain Lifespan

Moseriw,

You seem to be confusing WLL (Working Load Limit) with Breaking Strength.

Breaking strength is the force required to pull a chain apart in laboratory testing. Steel chain would have...

Re: Will wax "stick" to chalky/oxidized FRP?

I know (but don't have "documentation") that waxing makes a huge difference in how easy it is to keep our boat clean. If the wax is fresh and I catch a fish, the blood and guts rinse easily off the...

Re: Expected Chain Lifespan

Oh, that makes me feel better... "PROBABLY won't fail." Not the way I run my boat. But to each his own.

If you prefer to "probably be OK", just anchor downwind from me, Please?

Re: Expected Chain Lifespan

I know, understand, and agree. For us this is not at all a problem. The little knobs, lumps, and spikes will wear off in short order.

In the meantime, we are enjoying having the shiniest chain...

Re: Expected Chain Lifespan

Thank you everybody who recommended Baltimore Galvanizing. For 300 feet of 3/8 G4 chain plus a Mantus 105 lb anchor we paid US$350, including tax. Since the alternative was AT LEAST $1500 for new...

Re: B&G Zeus3 getting HOT

We have an older Zeus Touch. It gets hot. It has gotten hot every time we used it for the last 6 years(and we sail a LOT). It works, it keeps working. Ours is doubly challenged, because it lives...

Re: Weird sudden loss of 12V DC.

What’s the issue with magnetic compasses on your boat? Compasses have been installed on steel boats for 150 years. It’s not trivial to swing and compensate them, but it certainly can be done by...

Re: Advice Sought. Engine Seized after installing Injection pump

Not at all… if the valve stem is bent. Seems like a distinct possibility with all the manipulations that have gone on.

Re: Using Daewoo mini (220v) on our 110v boat?

Washing machines use rather little power, 100 to 200 watts, unless they are heating their own water, that sucks up power in a hurry. Far more power is needed to make the water.

Electric clothes...

Re: What's the best star tracker app for Android ?

Maybe this app is different, (I doubt it) but none of the ones I know of use the camera to look at the sky. They use the gps to calculate location, the compass to figure out direction, and the...

Re: Acceptable Length of fuel hose

Return flow is low, and pressure pushing it is high. You’ll have no problem.

I am curious, in the original arrangement, how could you be sure the return fuel was going to the same tank you were...

Re: Negatives of full Fibreglass hulls/decks?

[QUOTE=Rucksta;3502936]Older boats of solid glass were an indication the builder / designer did not yet understand how to build from thermoset plastic.

If you are suggesting that solid...

Re: Negatives of full Fibreglass hulls/decks?

Pretty much exactly like Benz said. An uncored hull is more flexible, and requires more care in design and construction to achieve an adequately stiff structure overall, but it can be done....

Re: Which bottom paint for San Francisco Bay?

^^^^^
Like he said.

Berkeley has great people, and a small, family run vibe. If you are nice to them, the crew will be delightful to work with.
