Re: Stand alone weatherfax still make sense?

I had a Furuno weather fax and NAVTEX with an HF whip antenna on the stern arch. I would not want to sail without it.

Re: Saildrve or shaft on the long term

A shaft with Vesconite cutlass bearings with a PSS dripless shaft seal (like the one from PYY) and flexible coupling to the reversing gear. Sail drives are trouble and best to be avoided.

Re: what to use for rudder stock bearing

I used Vesconite for both the rudder stock and the cutlass bearings. Excellent material for this.

Re: Simple BlackWater Monitor

Nice equipment Peggie. I was looking for something like that for a client. I don't want to make holes in the tank, so the outside sensors work for me. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Re: Better get serious..

I would never rely only on an electronic aid to navigation. On passage I don't go anywhere without sextant, log, paper charts and of course the trusty magnetic compass. But ok, I am an old fart...

Re: Center vs Aft Cockpit Sailboats

My last boat was a Dix43 CC in steel. I loved the spacious aft cabin, which doubled as an office when in port or at anchorage. At sea I sleep in the pilot berth anyway. Very dry and safe boat. The...

Re: Help! The Bahamas are hard!

That's why I always have paper charts on board wherever I go.

Re: Holding Tank Question

You will not need a macerator pump. Gravity will do the job. 1 1/2" hose is a good diameter for the discharge.

Re: Thoughts on this Van de Stadt 34?

Have it surveyed, then you know. The Van de Stadt boats are nice steel boats, but in the end with a 20+ year old yacht the big question is how well it has been maintained. The Diesel engine is...

Re: Are we alone?

I think it is a relevant question. If there's no cruisable ocean on those other planets, it is not worth going.:smile:

Happy New Year to you all!

Re: Another insulation question

When my steel hull yacht was being built, I had the whole internal hull and deck sprayed with a ceramic insulation paint. Same insulation value like foam, but without the issues you might have with...

Re: Northern Sailors - How Do You Keep Your Head in the Game?

We have our boats on the hard here where I live from October to April. The island where I live has a big charter company with a few hundred sailing boats. Every year they sell a number of the 3 - 5...

Re: Shipping a boat to the Med

Dockwise is one of the best. I used to sail for the mother company Spliethoff in the 1980's as an engineer .

Re: Mildew on vinyl rubrails

Bleach works best for me. Vinegar is an alternative but not so powerful.

I would recommend Mastervolt or Victron. Contact them with the specs of your electrical system and ask them for a detailed quote.

Re: Met a cargo ship with no ais?

Where I am sailing a lot (SE Asia), I would say 50% of vessels don't have AIS on. Which doesn't bother me, because I don't need AIS to see there's a vessel. When I started sailing AIS did not exist...
