Re: Viking anchors-the next level

Thank you for that link. It does not provide me the level of detail that I'm looking for. I would like to see a metallurgical cross sectional analysis with microindentation hardness numbers across...

Re: Viking anchors-the next level

Re: Sailing to Dominica

I was just in Dominica a couple months ago in Portsmouth. I anchored near the commercial dock the first evening as it was after hours. I went by dinghy in and checked in my boat and crew. Very...

Re: Looked at two boats - help me decide

You haven't said how you want to sail. That would make the decision process more focused.

From.my perspective, I would be more inclined towards the Contessa. The big ticket items are in better...

Re: Best cruising East Coast of North America

If you are up to it, i'd love to see a similar list as to why. Temperature only would not convince me to take my boat there.

Re: To Dc or not to DC..That is the question

Similar to my set-up but I don't have start battery being charged off alternator. I run all charging into my LPO house bank. Then I have a DC to DC charger to my start battery and a DC to DC charger...

Re: Bronze vs SS Bolts for Chainplates

Bronze does not suffer from crevice corrosion. It does have other corrosion mechanisms. But really, what's in a name? The OP should have the current bolts looked at by a professional - I know -...

Re: Bronze vs SS Bolts for Chainplates

Reading through the above articles, there are a number of inaccuracies that seem to be rampant within the marine industry.

I've only reviewed the article on stainless indepth. In that article...

Re: Best cruising East Coast of North America

I have to agree, Newfoundland is extraordinary. I also very much enjoyed Nova Scotia.

I'll have to explore the lower regions of the East Coast mentioned.

And Mike O'Rilley - it should kept a...

Re: Which digital caliper to buy?

Without being snarky, you are off by a decimal point. 0.001 inch accuracy is standard for calipers. Temperature control in measurements is required for measurements in the range of 0.0001 inches or...

Re: Which digital caliper to buy?

I used to use dial calipers all the time. I still have an old vernier caliper but that one i now only use for specific applications. It has a locking mechanism that locks and with a thumb screw very...

Re: Atricles. What types of articles do you like to see in magazines?

Interesting. Perhaps those that wish to write on topics aimed at the sailing world, would do better to focus on topics that cross over into many of these areas that would be of interest to the many...

Re: Atricles. What types of articles do you like to see in magazines?

Without a known data source, we rely on our own visual observations. Perhaps you know of a consolidated data source? Especially related to sailing as everything I've seen and heard is that it is in...

Re: Saga of the Sunken Sailboat - from Start to Sunk

I listen to all the "oh so sad" expressions and while I agree, I can't help but think what hubris some people have. The power of the ocean, ice and the forces of nature are greater than anything...

While the rest of your post i have no concerns about but the above line is simply absurd hyperbole and grossly inaccurate.

There have been actual tests done on fiberglass hull boats showing how...

Re: Navtec tie rod block material

Nothing wrong with with chrome on your turnbuckles. But take a look inside them. Especially in the threaded region - find any chrome coating?

Re: Navtec tie rod block material

the concerns with these bolts is that they are a structural part of the rigging structure. If you look at them carefully, they are most likely engineered fasteners.

they should not be chromed as...

Re: Navtec tie rod block material

This looks like an engineered fastener. Your image of the head is out of focus so it's pretty hard to see the color. Definitely a copper based alloy. Likely one of the bronze alloys. But there are...

Re: Navtec tie rod block material

Is the diameter coming up to the threads smaller than the OD of the threads? Is there then a "shoulder" coming up to the head?

Can you take a file and clean of a small area on the head, then take...
