Re: What is this component?

I finally remembered to ask the broker when I talked with him (kept slipping my mind). I'm still in touch since we're still doing the transfer (owner is in another country, so sending documents back...

Re: What is this component?

The imei is the only marking it has. No brand or model on the enclosure. The imei identifies the router, but what is it a router for? It's just hanging there next to the batteries by itself.

Re: What is this component?

The cables are cut, they don't go anywhere. The only ones connected to anything are the red and black, which are connected to the ground and the house battery switch. It's kind of hidden away next to...

What is this component?

I was inspecting the electrical installation while installing a pair of solar panels, and I found a small box connected straight to the batteries that I'm curious about. The picture is attached...

Re: Purifying my water tank

Well, those instructions seem pretty close to the ones I followed (after first placing the bleach in the tank I let it sit for four hours, forgot to mention that bit), so I'm relieved. Still, I will...

Purifying my water tank

I recently took ownership of a boat, and I wanted to make the water tanks safe for drinking water. Some details about the tanks: The boat has two plastic tanks, one forward and one aft. Forward tank...

Re: Where to tie the spinaker halyard?

Added my boat to my profile, she's 43 ft 9 in (13.34 m).

Where to tie the spinaker halyard?

I'm rather new to sailing, so there are a lot of "common sense" issues that I'm still learning. I went through the RYA Day Skipper course, so I know the theory and have some practice, but there are...

Re: 2 Solar Controllers

Here's an article explaining how to mitigate that issue when using a mppt controller and your panels in series: https://www.mpptsolar.com/en/solar-panels-in-series.html Basically you can...

Re: 2 Solar Controllers

I'm just a newbie myself, so take this with a grain of salt, but my understanding is that with a mppt controller you should wire your panels in series up to the voltage that your mppt can handle. If...

Re: What is this SIMRAD port for?

Oh, the pictures on that do look a lot like what I have. I think there's the small "iphone sleeve" missing (maybe hidden somewhere aboard), but it matches. Thanks!

PV Logic vs Solara solar panels

I'm working on sizing the solar installation for my yacht, and comparing brands. I'm interested in PV Logic and Solara primarily because I have a nearby supplier that offers these. Delivery times are...

What is this SIMRAD port for?

I'm buying an ex-charter boat, and among the equipment in the nav station I found an odd SIMRAD cover I can't make sense of. The cover opens up and there's a usb port and some kind of longer...

Re: First boat for cruising the Med

I got my ICC from the RYA (arrived on the mail today, even!) and I'm neither a UK citizen nor resident, so I can say with certainty that that's not right. The RYA can provide ICC for anyone except...

Re: Purchasing ex-charter 2012 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 439

The sails look fine. They're Elvstrøm sails, not sure how old. The genoa looked very good, the main was a bit dirty but looked fine. The main is a fully battened main in a lazybag, so likely more...

Re: Purchasing ex-charter 2012 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 439

Got the list of defects from the surveyor. Thought I'd share it to see opinions on the state of the yacht.

- Engine produced white smoke during high rpm testing. It is likely to be due to lack of...

Re: Purchasing ex-charter 2012 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 439

Yeah, the contract specifies all of that (different wording, but the clauses are essentially the same). The only thing not covered are "cosmetic defects".

What I wonder is to what extent...

Re: Purchasing ex-charter 2012 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 439

Hah, what a coincidence. He's the one I hired, we did the survey today. Only issue was the boat spent this past year sitting in the marina (only went out two weeks), and wasn't scrubbed, so there was...

Re: Purchasing ex-charter 2012 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 439

That's a good suggestion. I was already planning to have the surveyor provide a written list, but listing things under "functional" or "charter condition" would be good too. I was also considering,...

Purchasing ex-charter 2012 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 439

After finishing the RYA Day Skipper course, and having spent close to an year looking at boat listings, I've finally settled on a boat and signed the contract (subject to survey and sea trial). In...

Re: Collision avoidance at night

Was just having a look at the regulations that Juho linked, and noticed something I hadn't taken note of before. In the definitions:
(h) The term “vessel constrained by her draught” means a...

Re: Collision avoidance at night

Please have a look through the thread, there are a number of diagrams that show that the situation as described in the answer, with the other boat on a starboard tack, is possible if the other boat...

Re: Collision avoidance at night

I like the 5 short blasts because they're pretty universal. Even if they never read the colregs, they should draw attention to your boat and if they still look clueless and you decide to take action...

Re: Collision avoidance at night

Something that I found strange in the answer is the suggestion to tack, when usually it is required to turn to starboard. I would like to reread that section, since as you say, the other vessel in a...
