Re: Possible move to Victoria BC

I've been considering the same. What is the situation for a US documented vessel with a US citizen owner doing a live-aboard there?

Re: A question concerning VHF antennas...

Yep. That's what I do. I have a VHF antenna on its own mount down near deck level. Normally, it's my AIS antenna, but I have a Vesper Marine antenna splitter wired and ready to go to accept my voice...

Re: SSB Radio at home?

I'll second that! The Technician Class license is easy. I hold an Extra Class license (the highest grade), but for 90% of what I do on the Ham bands, only a Technician Class license is required. And...

Re: GPS jamming in Flordia

I'm impressed by your experiences Redneck. I have used ADF on many occasions when beyond or below range of VORs (both feet wet and dry). KGO (810 KHz) that's just southeast of SFO for example, can be...

Re: GPS jamming in Flordia

If your opponent is transmitting white noise at a much higher signal strength - it doesn't matter what type of fancy encoding is being used. That's no challenge when the satellites are only...

Re: GPS jamming in Flordia

It's kinda hard to make an instrument approach with a sextant because... there's no way to see the sun or any other celestial body because... the visibility is so low you're making an instrument...

Re: GPS jamming in Flordia

eLORAN is nearly as accurate as GPS. And without GPS functioning, you won't even know which reef you just ran up on.

Re: GPS jamming in Flordia

With eLORAN, we're talking about 100,000 watt transmitters on the surface. As opposed to GPS's 50 watt transmitters thousands of miles in space.

See...

Re: GPS / Sat Nav upgrade

When upgrading, it will be prudent to buy systems that utilize more than one navigation satellite system. There are three: GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. See thread...

Re: GPS jamming in Flordia

Hopefully, we've all gotten past the "denial" phase that GPS can and is being jammed.

Here are two stories on jamming that is occurring now:

Re: Benefits of a bigger boat?

Bigger boat: higher slip fees and more Captain Big Boat ego boost. OK, my full bias disclosure: I went from a Westsail 32 to a Pearson Ariel. That's a boat volume and weight reduction of about a...

Re: Accelerated degradation of LiFePO4 batteries when stored fully charged

For long term storage, I've connected a 12 volt "wall wart" power supply to the pack through a steering diode. If the pack voltage drops below 12.0 volts (3.0 Vpc), the supply automatically takes...

Re: SSB Radio at home?

For an antenna: find a utility pole with an insulated guy wire that's near a chain link fence -- where you can park your RV. Use the fence as ground and the guy wire as the antenna. Make connections...

Re: Skipping bottom paint this year?

I use Trinidad...

I feel their estimate in the 60,000 range by August 4th is low. My pocket calculator, tracking...
