Re: Basse Terre - local knowledge appreciated
My French is terrible, but what I understood is that it died, and they have no plans to replace it. The local immigration office doesn't have a computer either, but supposedly will provide paper...

Be aware that Deshaies customs is a mess right now. Le Pelican's computer is gone permanently, and the immigration office outside of town was never open for the 4 days we were there last week. We...

Re: Contaminated Diesel (Algae?) - solutions and prevention
With that level of gunk in the filter, I'd disassemble and clean the ball valve in the racor as well, once the filter is running clean.

This has been ongoing for over a year. My guess is that it's a faulty repeater somewhere in DR. Surprising it's been going on for so long.

Re: Antenna Splitter for VHF/AIS
It does sound like poor practice. I like to have only the minimal connections direct to battery. We have separate panel breakers for instruments, VHF, and AIS.
Nice to be able to turn off the nav...

Re: Pros and Cons of folding props
Agree with the positives. Easiest and most cost-effective upgrade for boat speed. Grease once in a while, and keep an eye on the anodes (we haven't noticed any increased anode loss). We have a...

Re: Whale Cay Cut vs. Manjack Channel
We've been around the north side of Manjack a couple of times. I wouldn't really even call it a channel, more just wide open. It would be a long way around if you're heading south.
The north bay...

One critical factor I forgot to mention. If our bank is below 25% in the morning, the inverter will cut out due to voltage drop trying to make coffee! Definitely not "comfortable" [emoji3]

We have seen freighters divert for us at 10+ miles. Not to mention many, many cases where improved SA at shorter ranges was a benefit.
It's a no brainer IMO.

Both. Hardwired to plotter/N2K, wifi to Navionics. The Vesper app is good (iThing a bit better than Android but both work). Also outputs N2k messages from other systems onto wifi which is nice.
