Re: New or nearly new

I'm a big fan of letting others pay the forecourt tax and handling the snagging issues in almost anything I buy. Unless you have a particular setup that you've always wanted I would go with the 55.1

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

TBH given the age of the boat we are looking at we expect to either give it away to a young sailor or recycle it after we're done but the previous owners aren't interested in that. They would rather...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Well I can assure you the sellers sure aren't seeing it that way. They want their initial cost plus what they put into it.

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

I've never seen a trapper, does look pretty good though. My wife is now considering arranging a tour of England and arranging a series of viewings.

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Jim, I'm sailing in Scotland. If I can't find a boat I feel safe in, I wouldn't be going out anyway. It's not like you can swim in the sea here and your dinghy won't last long either outside of a...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Sorry but that's just a daft way to think. Of course I'm going to properly insure my boat. Whether it's 1k, 10K or 1m. Inexperienced people make mistakes, you don't want your sailing life end because...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

I'll probably look at a project boat for the second boat when we want to go up to 36'-40'. Also insurance is the issue in the UK, if the boat isn't up to a certain standard you just won't get...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Honestly, I think it's the brokers. Usually you can negotiate with people on price and come to a mutually acceptable price. However, the brokers are cutting us dead at our opening offer and...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

My wife did find the boat she loved but unfortunately it didn't love her back because she was too poor.

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Yeah this is exactly the position we're in. However instead wanting the $10,000 for a boat needing this level of investment. They want $15k - $16k (in pounds) which leaves me in an immediate deficit...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

No it's in Scotland. Unfortunately we don't have the experience to sail a yacht back from England yet. Which is why we're going to work on gaining experience to allow us to do that. England has...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Found a nice Seamaster 925 but broker says no negotiation possible (I think because of minimum brokers fee). So I think the plan this year will be to do more training unless we stumble on to...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

1: I'm not an American so unfortunately I don't get to ignore economic reality with nonsense.

2. The median US income is $31K. After taxes. Your 10% wealth generation is $2k per year. 2k x 20 =...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

There are always the poor in every generation but most people are going to be hurting in the future. The middle class is going to start disappearing.

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

I would kill to find a sailor such as yourself.

I found some people think that buying something a decade ago classifies as new. In the lifespan of the boat, yeah it is but in the lifespan of the...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

I'm big fan of the Nic 30 and looked at two of them but both despite looking superficially good had been thrashed to death as racers. Lots of deck stress fractures painted over and overstressed...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Ah yeah I see. The real surprise though is that I'm not competing with anyone. The brokers have told us nobody has even viewed these boats but still the owners won't negotiate on price. They won't...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Yeah I think that's exactly the problem. Being on the outside is a lot of the problem. I think once we're in, it will be a lot easier.

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Hi Pete,

We are in the lucky position of not needing to finance either our purchase or refit costs. The money we are spending is the amount of money we are prepared to lose if it all goes wrong....

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

To be honest, that indeed might be abit of the case. I found one unicorn in my wife maybe I think I'm good at it :D.

However, if by unicorn, you mean a reasonably maintained old boat and a price...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

I can only go on marine surveyor recommendations. I don't have the experience to ignore the red and amber warnings on surveys. Are you saying you shouldn't listen to the surveyor? What impact will...

Yeah and you'll be amazed at the raised eyebrows when you start pulling open panels and shining lights in the dark places. Nobody want's you looking at their keel bolts :D

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Yeah that's what we're doing. If you're buying a 1970s boat then fixing it up is always going to be the case. I don't mind replacing all the obsolete kit on a boat I just don't want to pay for it...

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

Well I'm out looking at as many as we can find but TBH I think the decent boats must be selling before they hit the websites. Atleast I'm young enough to wait 5 years. Just means a few more grouse...
