Re: CLODs

You are definitely not the only one. My wife and I lost our liveaboard Hatteras MY to Ian on Sept 28 2022. The reason I list the date so specifically is my 58th birthday is Sept 29. Yep. 2 years 1...

Re: Lobster/Crab/Shrimp traps - aaaaargh!

I'm sure I'm not the first one to chime in on this, and our boat was a 54' Hatteras motor yacht. But the first owner installed line cutters in 1986 that honestly looked like they could sever mooring...

Re: Is the market flooded with fake dangerous solar cable

While not with solar cables I have become very distrustful of Amazon reviews. That said, I tend to watch YouTubers like Trying Not to Sink and podcasts like Boat Galley for product recommendations.

Re: Bad experience with a yacht broker, appreciate some advice

We started out trying to work with one of the biggest brokerages in the country. Along the way I had a nightmare experience with Curtis Stokes himself, resulting in me getting a Cease and Desist...

Re: Planning a route - Fort Myers to Miami

Does your insurance company know you're doing this? Even with 13+ years in the Coast Guard our insurance required a licensed captain accompany us to move from Stuart to Fort Myers and sign off my...

Re: Do I Really Need a Life Raft?

As an old Coast Guardsman, with experience in SAR and recovery, keep the raft. Never say a boat 'won't' do something. Whether it's fire, sinking, or (Captain Ron moment) hijackers, having an escape...

Re: Looking for Recommendation for Fresh Water Flush Electric Head

We also have the Dometic. Can't remember the model but it has been trouble free for the 18 months it's been installed, far superior to the GalleyMaid it replaced.

Re: Any tips for reducing frost/ice build up on cold plates ?

I actually was a service manager for a transport refrigeration and temp control dealership. The fan, drain tube and door seals are key. The trouble with a cold plate system is you'll never keep it...

Re: Long term refrigerator storage

Instead of taping vents and discharges, put balls of steel wool in them if you can. Won't allow bugs etc, and won't clog if you forget to remove them when you splash...

Re: Pump out black tanks?

Most US jurisdictions including the USCG will expect your Y-valve to be secured in the closed (dump to tank) position whenever you're in coastal and Inland waters. Just FYI

Re: Pump out black tanks?

We actually had to open the tank-top fitting when we took possession of Pau Hana to look at this. Hatteras originally built our boat with a bronze pickup tube in the holding tank, but in the 45 years...

Re: Peracetic acid for decalcification

We replaced the hose to the tank on our 45year old Hatteras (PO was plunging!) And following conversation with other long term liveaboards in our marina, we keep a spray bottle of white vinegar...

Re: Marina recommendation in Ft. Lauderdale

If you're willing/able to range a little afield, I'd recommend Sunset Bay in Stuart. Nice staff
, in-slip free pumpout service

Re: Bilge pump recommendations please

I have a deep well in the bow lazarette on my Hatteras, and since this is the backup pump for the V-berth head, I did almost this exact same technique, using a scrap piece of Starboard.

Re: First Time Boat Buyer--Insurance Broker/ Florida?

FL Marine Underwriters (954) 678-2668

We had quotes from BoatUS/Geico only to be told "we will not insure first-time owners". Rick and his team secured coverage for us as liveaboard owners...

Re: ULTRA MARINE WEST GIVEAWAY - Ends Oct 5th

With a new to us 40 year old Hatteras 54', having good equipment is crucial. Refitting the ground tackle is one of our more expensive projects, so a new swivel and anchor would be wonderful in...

Re: Cost of new A/C install

I installed 3 units on our Hatteras 54'. While I realize there's a huge difference between a sailboat and a power boat, I'd like to share what I ran into. Disclaimer - I was essentially replacing a...

Re: Best Small Air Conditioner for Oceanis 41

Re: GE 100% silicon for fixed window rebed

Just to add to what Bill said, (earlier I was on my phone), I actually used the butyl string product that I found at Home Depot for about $8/box. There are 6-8 strings attached (it's like butyl tape...

Re: GE 100% silicon for fixed window rebed

I went thru this with a fixed window. I used butyl tape behind the frame, then went around the frame/deck house join with a line of Boatlife brand sealant. It holds up better to marine conditions and...

Re: Stick to COLREGS or keep out of my way ?

Going to probably get flamed for this but here it is. I am an old Coast Guardsman and I saw this all too often. Reality is that the commercial vessels usually assume the rules are on their side...
