Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

For me in my recreational use it's OpenCPN. When I worked on the water for a living it was whatever my employer had installed. I use OpenCPN due to it's ability to run so many chart formats from...

Re: Captain's License vs ASA 105 course

Yes, you related an actual experience. But it was on a work boat, not a pleasure boat. And you were the captain of the boat. I understand it was a no license required work boat.

But my ...

Re: Captain's License vs ASA 105 course

A challenge to those posters stating that holding a USCG master's credential holds you to a higher standard in a recreational boat incident. Provide some proof. Cite court cases where a...

Re: Captain's License vs ASA 105 course

I have been informed by someone far more knowledgable in matters USCG investigations and the CFRs that the bolded statement below is not true. I have never been able to find anything other than dock...

Re: Captain's License vs ASA 105 course

Having been in the small tonnage, 500 gross tons, arena since the ealry 70s I've watched as the "Captain's schools" have become a way to get the training and education. My observation from working...

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 (Android 9) Unusable Slow

Yes, your post as well as others is what prompted me to look into chart storage. I had been happy for quite some time with charts on the SD card. Willing to accept somewhat degraded performance for...

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 (Android 9) Unusable Slow

Dave,

Apologize for taking so long for a good response to you. Sometimes other things in life are higher priority than boating.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 (Android 9) Unusable Slow

Dave,

On the tablet I currently have ENC and RNC for Ak, Or, Wa and Hi loaded. Performance is very poor at any zoom level, especially panning. ENC performance is far worse than RNC, nearly not...

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 (Android 9) Unusable Slow

Re: New OpenCPN Anroid user, HELP!

I am far from an expert on OpenCPN and Android, others who are will be along.

I do have some suggestions.

Install OCN on your surface. A GPS puck is not a big expense. Learning OCN is much...

The short answer is don’t lock anyone out of any key functions of OCPN. The interface is well designed, simple to use and easy to understand for the most part.

When I started the...
