Re: Norseman hull - cored or not

If you’re talking about the Norseman 447 sold from Marina del Rey, I was told by the surveyor in MDR, that they were built in three hull versions, no core, balsa core, airex core. He said that I...

Re: Diagnosing Navico/Simrad/B&G 4G Radar

IIRC, the RI10 has nothing to do with the radar signals. It’s there only to take Heading data from N2K and pass it to the radar using an otherwise unused pair (brown, brown/white, I think). You can...

Re: Moody 49 lost on bar at Bahia del Sol, El Salvador

I was in BDS in May 2000. I’d been given a GPS position to wait for the panga. When I tried to plot it on the charts, most of them had the entrance at the NORTH end of the bay, not at the south end...

Re: Do you cook using salt water while cruising?

I found a recipe for bread that used 1/2 cup of fresh water to proof the yeast and then 4-1/2 cups of saltwater. It made 4 loaves of bread and a batch of cinnamon rolls. But I never found a way to...

Re: Precharge circuit to protect your Lifepo4 and inverter

With all the electronics that have a "soft" power off, I’d like to keep voltage transients to a minimum. I don’t know how "necessary" it is to avoid sparks when connecting an inverter, but the big...

Re: Best material for water tank

I wanted to do it "right." I discovered that even the people who built fiberglass tanks commercially didn’t really know what they were doing, or why. They basically used whatever materials they could...

Re: Precharge circuit to protect your Lifepo4 and inverter

No hair, any color. I just don’t like sparks if I can help it. I’ve worked on 50k watt broadcast transmitters, big radar systems, 5volt, 1000amp computer power supplies. Sparks are only good at...

Re: Prepaying for repairs

+1 to walking. I’d never pay up front. I might buy all the materials, on my account, and have them shipped to me. But not the labor. I did half dozen big lighting repair jobs for people. They bought...

Re: Precharge circuit to protect your Lifepo4 and inverter

Simple way. Hook up the positive wire first. Then take your 12 volt test light and clip the ground wire to the negative wire terminal. Put to probe tip through the terminal, touch it to the negative...

Re: Best material for water tank

I built fiberglass tanks for my first boat. I spent many months trying to find out how to actually do it. Most of the time, it was "What kind of resin? Why the kind in those barrels. What’s the...

Re: What Happens When You Exceed Maximum Horsepower Ratings of Dinghies?

Nahhh. Don’t exaggerate. I then weighed about 150, my wife weighed about 120. The groceries were as much as we could carry. Scuba diving with 3 people and equipment. I doubt if I got above 1000#....

Re: What Happens When You Exceed Maximum Horsepower Ratings of Dinghies?

I’ve got a 12’ dinghy with an inflatable floor. Rated on the plate at 1600# load and a 25 HP engine. With 2 people and a load of groceries, it will plane easily with an 8HP. With the 25, you can...

Re: Specific gravity

The SG of a brand new lead acid battery is determined COMPLETELY by the ratio of acid to water in the electrolyte. Different manufacturers use different initial values, and they will often change ...

Re: Specific gravity

Since the OP's batteries are almost new, their fully-charged SG should be a good starting point. A year from now, the fully-charged SG will be lower than when new. That represents the loss in...

Re: Specific gravity

The best definition that I’ve heard of "fully charged" is: when being charged at the manufacturer suggested absorbtion voltage, the specific gravity doesn’t increase for 3 hours."

Some people say,...

Re: Specific gravity

Specific gravity doesn’t tell you much unless you know what it was when the batteries were brand new. It can tell you whether the cells are equal or not.

Re: Replacing solenoid; is it special?

Not all the solenoids that look the same have the same connections. Yes, the two big studs are the switched in and out. But the small terminals vary:
1. Only 1 small terminal used for the coil....

Re: Which Countries are bribes/tips expected by officials?

Since my first entry to Panama in 2002, I’ve never had an official ask for a bribe. Ever.

Twice, I’ve been with somebody in their car. They were righteously stopped for a traffic violation....

Re: General questions about propane refit - solenoid gauge

Since I bought my current boat in 1998, I’ve replaced the regulator 3 times. In every case, the failure ended up leaking an (almost) new tank of propane. Apparently the "rubber" diaphragm develops...

Re: General questions about propane refit - solenoid gauge

Another advantage of the industrial solenoid valves is that you can buy them for use one the high-pressure side of the regulator. That way, when the regulator fails, it’s isolated by the solenoid.

Re: Wire lug Crimper

MCM is "thousands of circular mils" used for wire that’s bigger than 4/0. You probably don’t have a boat big enough to need wire that size.

Re: Nicholson 38 sunk on Baja Ha-Ha

In 1982, while located an overnight sail WEST of the Farallons, I was (thankfully) able to talk to SF Coast Guard with my old Motorola VHF and 3db mast-top antena. I had the radio on 1-watt output to...

Re: Wire lug Crimper

The hydraulic ones I’ve seen all crimped just fine, but the dies weren’t anywhere near correctly calibrated. If you could figure out the right size, it worked fine.

Re: Wire lug Crimper

Hex vs "square" crimp. The FTZ crimper mentioned up-thread, and widely recommended, isn’t a hex-shaped crimper. I couldn’t find any real evidence that the hex crimp was "better" than the square...
