Re: Looking to buy a boat but a lot of rust on the engine!!

Absolutely true. Ours saw us, understood that we were under time pressure to buy as we had a long absence from work already approved. It lured us, we got hooked, put it in a boatyard for the most...

Re: Looking to buy a boat but a lot of rust on the engine!!

Whenever you have to work on the engine, screws might not turn willingly but might possibly break off. The alternator and the rest of the engine electrics might cause trouble due to corrosion. The...

Re: Prepaying for repairs

Sounds like a story from the book "Don't stop the Carnival".

And no, the request from the yard is not fair to you and I would agree that you should walk. All the risk would be on you - that is...

Re: Next Sabbatical? Getting the flying Dragon ready again ...

Slow progress: New engine mounts, engine aligned, all seacocks replaced with bronze ones, small black water tank, all done in summer by a boatyard.

Engine descaled in autumn.

The miracle of...

Re: Best Practices to Make Sure Jib/Genoa/Traveler Tracks Don’t Leak?

Never is a very long time ...

Do you have enough space to glue the screw from below (head below the deck) into the deck and fix the track with nuts from above? That should discourage the screw...

Re: How much...?

Mast and sails are available and in good condition?

I guess if what you get (Hull, interior including upholstery, rigging including sails, engine, rudder, cooker, possibly fridge, spray hood...

Re: Raising the Main Solo

Will the boat heave to under jib and with tiller hard over? Then raising the jib, heaving to and raising the main (with the mainsheet slack) while hove to might work. It works on many boats - you...

Re: "Unusual" project - having trouble getting the right build - custom needed?

The reason why the production boat builders are unhappy about removing a bunk is likely, that that bunk is structural reinforcement and they would have to get the naval architect that designed the...

Re: Next Sabbatical? Getting the flying Dragon ready again ...

One of the bigger topics is engine mounts and shaft seal. The engine itself had a lot of work done on it in early 2019 including descaling of the head, regrinding of the valves etc. and runs nicely....

Next Sabbatical? Getting the flying Dragon ready again ...

There is no denying - we (the wife and me) are getting on a bit. Living in Germany, where the official retirement age now is 67 for our age group, we are not sure if we will still be able to go...

Re: Best brand for instruments/plotter

Does any of the brands have a bright red or yellow button to get a MOB fix in a single button push? If yes - I would seriously consider to go with that brand.

Yes, the modern electronics have...

Re: Najad 330, got my eye on one, any experiencez

Possibly. They have two things in common - good reputation and a bit beyond my means.

Re: Najad 330, got my eye on one, any experiencez

Najad as a builder has a really good reputation. The boats are sometimes regarded as a bit in the motorsailer field.

There are owner associations.

Re: Adding keel ballast

Is this the designer of your boat? https://www.bruceroberts.com/ If yes - why not try and get his view?

As stated already by others, the additional weight combined with the leverage from the...

Re: Antagonists - or just me

Some more boatyard gripe:

Twice I have had work done on the engine. In both cases, I had to clear out a few litres of Diesel from the bilge afterwards. As we have a liner inside, it is not...

Re: Antagonists - or just me

Some more ...

With the need to have a lot of your work done by boatyards, roughly budget for around 10 % of the price of a similar sized new boat for the upkeep for maintenance and repairs. Per...

About the fact, that once on the hard, you are at the merci of the yard - that is so true and not just where you are. I have seen boatyards in Europe pull beautiful wooden boats in the summer and...

Beyond that - how...

Re: Bowspirit - potentially dangerous?

They are dangerous if you have to crawl out on them in a seaway. They are pretty safe if you do not have to crawl out on them in a seaway. So, if you have a perfectly working roller at the front or...

Is the mast still standing or already on the hard? On the hard, it would be easy to determine, if the mast itself is bent or if just the stays were stretched a bit and the curve can be trimmed out...

Re: Bent wire - cause for concern?

Yes, should be replaced. Likely a few hundred. It is pretty common. There are owners who just straighten the wire, but the right thing is to replace. Because some strands in the wire had been...
