Re: Spectra watermaker questions

I bought a membrane from Wateranywhere. Fits and works fine. Much less expensive than Spectra part.

Re: Orca attacks off Norway, moving 3,000 miles. Learnt behaviour?

I agree about the noise. I would think carrying a few seal bombs while sailing these areas could be worthwhile.

Re: Stops to sleep between Hatteras and Chesapeake Bay Entrance?

Just pull up to the shallows near the beach and set anchor. Depending on the weather it can be fine or rocking but you can get some rest. I’ve rounded six times and done that twice. Ocracoke to Rudee...

Re: Watermaker Usage Question: I have an old Spectra

I have a Spectra as well. Traveling up the U.S. east coast for the last three years I found using it was more of a pia than it was worth, located under the bedding of the port forward berth it...

Re: Raymarine declares ES series chartplotters "end of life"

I’ve had to replace Raymarine MFD, AIS, autopilot computer, anemometer, two VHF radios, seatalk spine cable, instrument transducer converter, all in the last two years. Probably more stuff that I’ve...

Re: Hurricane Ian - I don't get it

I could not imagine a bigger nightmarish cluster occurring if every boat that was considered seaworthy on the west coast of Florida picked up and ran somewhere, thinking they could outrun or...

Try Findacrew.net. Cheap to join and easy to use. I’ve found several crew there.

Re: Key West sailing advise

If you are determined to do KW then you might consider doing your 114 course at the sailing school there, with the stipulation that they will rent you a cat for your honeymoon. They get a twofer and...

Re: Anybody been to Cuba recently?

Not too far off though, except I think it’s the Florida lobby groups that are probably more involved. Imagine the damage to it’s tourism economy if people skipped over FL for a cheaper, less spoiled...

Re: State of Living Aboard in Florida

I think a lot of the slips are being taken up by yachts that would normally be cruising the Bahamas or Caribbean. I really struggled finding a spot for my 44’ cat this winter, seeing many good sized...

Re: Cruisers: How do you stay fit?

A fellow next to my old slip in Key West had a portable rowing machine he used daily. Looked like a good work out. I’m on a quest to find one now. I definitely do not improve my 61yo shape while...

Re: Watermaker Failure Due to Absent Weep Hole

None. It’s supposed to be a sealed dry magnetic pump. If any weeping occurs the seals are failing and the motor and your wallet are in imminent danger of damage. It’s supposed to be an early warning...

Re: Watermaker Failure Due to Absent Weep Hole

When I removed my pump motor I saw rust streaks down the sides as well. Never really enough water to notice a leak though but enough to ruin the motor. Was yours the Procon magnetic pump as well?...

Angry Watermaker Failure Due to Absent Weep Hole

We purchased a two year old cruising cat with a Spectra
400 MKII watermaker mounted under a bed. It had always seemed unusually loud but maintained its water making until this summer when it...

Re: FLL to Cape Cod on the outside

Hi Allen! How’s the Abaco resurrection going? Before the plague hit we actually were going to stop off there on our way north and seen if we could lend a hand or bring supplies. Maybe by June? I take...

Re: FLL to Cape Cod on the outside

Does anyone know if XM weather is receivable out in the gulf stream? We rounded Hattaras twice last year and it’s available there, and that is pretty Far East but not sure East of Georgia where we...

Clanging noise in boom

I have a very loud clanging noise about 8’ forward of aft, in my left ear, when running under a reef and in light winds and rocking seas. Sounds like a ball pean hammer in the boom. Is this part of...

Re: Spectra Watermaker Filter Cleaning?

Re: Spectra Watermaker Filter Cleaning?

I had not tried drying them out after cleaning. Also had not really paid attention to the number being displayed on the prefilter menu item. I take it that is resistance pressure. Don't really recall...

Re: Correct Steering Fluid? Dexron or Other?

Was told the correct fluid is "Dex/Merc" by Pennzoil. It was readily available at the diesel supply house near Just Cats and the matching color when poured.

Re: Ordering Pet Fencing, Need Safety Line Length

We ultimately went with the white Sailrite product. Just personal preference. Found some 3M plastic outdoor rated adhesive backed clips at CVS of all places which really helped around the gates.

Re: Correct Steering Fluid? Dexron or Other?

Thanks. I will pick up some of that. I don't appear to be leaking anywhere and the fluid level isn't changing. I think it got knocked over at some point out of the plastic strap while some...
