Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

I too must agree with the "most" here. If only counting full-time cruisers the numbers may be lower, but among all boaters I wouldn't be surprised if it had over 90% market share.

However! What...

Re: Collision Avoidance

Ok, I'm a bit better oriented now; I was placing the collision one headland to the west. Yes, this was indeed the one off Iro Saki with a TSS, note closely the TSS' position relative to the land and...

Re: Collision Avoidance

ACX Crystal had a bit of clutter compared to one of the other ships at the scene, but even with the filtering on the Wan Hai 266's screen, Fitzgerald was showing up.

Re: Collision Avoidance

Is there a TSS (voluntary or otherwise) here? I thought I remembered one as well, but don't see any mention in the report. A peek at TSS in the area suggests I'm remembering the one off Iro Zaki...

Re: IRPCS/COLREGS Source

In general, as with the American version at https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/navigation-rules-amalgamated, country-specific differences will be called out as those are specific to local waters per Rule...

Re: Collision Avoidance

I wonder how much of this is insufficient resources vs not wanting to get involved in minor disputes with minimal supporting evidence: the "if it's not documented it didn't happen" problem.

Sounds...

Re: Collision Avoidance

I'm betting an AI would have an easier job of it once Rule 5 is clarified/revised. Given the number of recurring human factors that keep popping up in accident reports, an AI that can follow the...

Re: Signal for hove to?

That's not too bad; you can make progress (if that's what's intended) and in any case it's speed through water, not over ground, that's relevant for collision avoidance.

Re: Collision Avoidance

Hey, it keep us internet experts in practice! (On an largely un-related note, it seems like the ENC re-scheming is going to break the current model of selecting charts e.g. in the OpenCPN...

Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

Somewhat agree, and particularly agree for mobile devices. This is the downside of letting people "get under the hood"; they can break things just as easily as fix them. Having two people (or one...

Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

Ah, I was seeing what looked like bundles, e.g. "FR - North Coast of France - La Manche (English Chanel)" for $205, which appears to have a number of charts. Clicking through CW I get about 64 for...

Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

Their chart prices are high, but far closer to the O-charts end of the scale than the "buy individual ENCs/paper" end of the scale.

I agree it would have to be good, but I also like seeing...

Re: Reasonably safe Crypto funds when traveling.

I think this touches on the cruising-relevant bits. I'm used to plastic. I'm just as likely to have old Roman denarii in my pocket as I am modern coins, but that changes in different parts of the...

Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

Eh, I like to draw on charts, add notes, review the chart details, etc. You never know when the chart notes in out of the way places might have gems such as "This chart cannot be accurately...

Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

Pavel, your comment has inspired me to drop a post into the support forum. (Planned for this weekend if all goes well.)

From a technical perspective the capabilities are all there, so it's more a...

Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

Unfortunately this is only the case for the iPhone; the iPads still require purchase of the cellular-capable model as the GPS hardware is on the cellular hardware.

The retirement of those...

Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

If my guess is correct, all those are generally plotters for the leisure market, yes? While I'm not suggesting we need ECDIS, not addressing basic concepts like "knowing the source of my charts" is...

Re: "Best" chart/navigation software

Where you expect to sail will often determine which charts you need, and that can filter the apps. Since I also run all-Apple hardware, what I use might work for you.

For local sailing here...

Re: BT & USB-C GPS/GLONASS receiver that will work with iPad and MacBook

That seems reasonable. I wouldn't spend that much on an adapter for the laptop either.
In the meantime, you can likely get a feel for how you might use the tablet aboard. A few thoughts on...

Re: BT & USB-C GPS/GLONASS receiver that will work with iPad and MacBook

Just did a little more testing. Running GPS2IP on my phone, I can feed data to both Navionics on the iPad and other apps on my Macbook.

Since I have a cellular iPad I disabled Navionics' access...

Re: BT & USB-C GPS/GLONASS receiver that will work with iPad and MacBook

If OP can leave his phone plugged in and running this, then both iPad and Macbook should be able to consume the location data. The heading data might even be accurate.

Re: BT & USB-C GPS/GLONASS receiver that will work with iPad and MacBook

Shame, looks like the BadElf had a steep jump in price, so $180 vs $500 is a great deal more than $30. Might as well buy a cheap Android tablet at that price.

Re: Growing ChatGPT use on the site.

I suspect the growth of content marketing has contributed to this by driving demand for such content. Unfortunately the AI-created content is particularly untrustworthy (not that intern-created...

Re: Captain's License vs ASA 105 course

I believe Nav3 is also the works as an OPM pre-req, but the specifics are still being developed. As CoNav is, well, coastal and CelNav is about taking sights, this should be an opportunity to...

Re: Local Notice to Mariners - is there a less unwieldy solution?

Yup! The nice thing is, the ATON discrepancies for the current week are bolded, so if you're keeping on top of things finding the changes isn't that hard.

Even if you miss a number of weeks you...
