Re: 5 dead NZ, boat reportedly overturned by whale.

The boat was surveyed for 10 passengers plus at least one crew, so not overloaded

Re: Maritime NZ report into the loss of the yacht Essence, October 2019

Good point Jim, but it looks like the regs now state that it must have one fitted if it's over 43cm square. Would be interesting to double check the definition of "window" in the regs

Re: Maritime NZ report into the loss of the yacht Essence, October 2019

A jsd is the first thing I thought of when I read about the conditions. Running downwind in those conditions is a hell of a job

Re: Maritime NZ report into the loss of the yacht Essence, October 2019

The question is whether a "strongly built hull", strong enough to resist the kinds of forces encountered when the boat falls off a 5m wave, is compatible with having huge windows. I very much doubt...

Re: Musk says Starlink will work on boats

Well I have to say it's just like magic. I got one a while back, and took it down to the boat. Placing the dish down on the side deck, pointing at a dirty great furled Genoa, sheets, lifelines and...

Maritime NZ report into the loss of the yacht Essence, October 2019

Looks like Maritime NZ is looking to insist that storm boards are...

Re: Captain or Boat Wanted: Vietnam or Mexico to Cairns Australia

Another point the op seems to have missed is that any skipper agreeing to do this would be of very questionable ability to actually complete the task, given their inability to digest information and...

Re: What’s the minimum depth you would sail in?

Depends on where you're used to sailing. I learnt on the east coast of the UK, where three feet under the keel counts as very deep water and no concerns. We would touch the bottom two or three...

Re: Replaced ball valve with boat in the water. Success!

Yes, definitely get rid of those awful hose clamps and get some proper marine ones, then tighten hard with a warmed hose.

Re: Cascading mistakes turned it to a bad day

Yes, if you get back to harbour with the same number of boats and crew as you set off then that counts as a good sailing day to me.

My only real surprise in your story (you have already recognised...

Re: Ultra Leather….worth it?

Ultra suede is a knock-off Alcantara and nothing like as good as the real thing. Very hard to buy though as almost all production goes to superyachts and supercars.

Re: What do you think of my thru hull condition?

When my boat was surveyed there were two inlets identified by the surveyor as needing replacement before I sailed anywhere. They were in better condition than those.

Replacing those would be at...

Re: AIS integration

I use the vesper xb8000, giving ais as well as transmitting all nmea data via wifi. Appears perfectly on my raymarine MFD but mostly I use an iPad with SeaIQ, where it's so much better. The MFD is...

Re: Compression post / deck Red Flag? (83' Hunter 36)

That's nothing to do with "sag". To make that crack clean across the structural bulkhead took some serious force even if it were underbuilt at the time. Any cracks that size in fibreglass means you...

Re: Best Small Air Conditioner for Oceanis 41

I don't know many, but I installed a webasto cool blue 8 a could of years ago, which I'm very pleased with. Easy to install, soft start available, heats fairly well even in south Island winter.

Re: Losing coolant

I think you have the most obvious ones listed. If your engine bay is clean and your coolant green (or otherwise identifiable) you can discount hose leaks into the bilge. If your hot water isn't...

Hello three years later poster . I installed my system (home assembled Jay car dual kit for about $300) three years ago after the boat was newly antifouled. Recently a diver in the marina cleaned...

Just a note to remind you that the cellular option is most certainly not a "must" with an iPad, unless you don't actually want much in the way of navigation. If you are going to use it for...

Re: Leaving boat plugged in and power on when leaving boat

I'd never connect water in the first place, and certainly not leave it so.

I think the post you're referring to was talking about ac, which in a boat involves pumping seawater into and through...

Re: Covid vaccination status for CF members

Drug companies have to sell at much higher prices in the US to pay for the ludicrous legal challenges and awards that are the norm over there. Same reason all medical costs are so high. The entire...
