Totally agree. I spent seven years in the Caribbean, also using a Bullet. I imagine phone providers have improved the situation a little but it's interesting to know by not much.

There is no doubting the convenience of mobile phone based Internet connectivity but even in developed countries the bandwidth available is easily and regularly surpassed by WiFi connectivity.

Duckbill valves will probably fix the problem but use double hose clips back to back with 180° offset on connections each side of pump. Warm hose with hairdryer before tightening.

DC is DC yes but your laptop will require a specific voltage usually above the nominal 12 volts available on your boat.

Walmart among others offer DC-DC laptop chargers with variety of power...

From a safety point of view you should be feeding your DSC equipment directly from a GPS source. This would give you the required GGA sentence with $GP prefix.

NMEA v2.0 or 3.0 is not an issue...
