Re: Electric Air Inflator for Dinghy?????

I used the 20vdc DeWalt vacuum. Just move the hose to the exhaust port. Initially I expected to have to use the hand pump to top it up but the vacuum did a surprisingly good job on the dinghy,...

Boat shopping with copious filters

I think people are going to tell me "that's what boat brokers are for!", but any time I talk to sales people about anything, I give them my criteria and then they start putting stuff in front of me...

Re: Big Solar on a Leopard 48 Cat

Eh, you're probably not going to save money switch from propane to heaps of solar and batteries and induction cooktop. But you've already got electricity on the boat, so removing a fuel system...

Cramped hanging locker? Folding hangers!

Check out Simone's latest creation. It actually makes sense. And from the hanging lockers I've dealt with in the past, I think it could be pretty beneficial on boats.

Re: ICW: What does it really mean to "skip Georgia"

We just sail through the night and get there two days earlier - but there are certainly plenty of places to pop in and anchor if that's what you're into.

Re: What is this block at the top of my mast? And topping lift question.

I wouldn't trust that forward block for anything more than raising a flag. If it failed and your spinnaker dumped in the water in front of you, you might run over it and foul your keel, rudder, and...

Re: ICW: What does it really mean to "skip Georgia"

It's the same for me - I don't understand motoring a sailboat in the ICW when you can hop offshore and have a pleasant passage.

Re: Victron Multiplus

With that much battery and inverter power I'd be dumping the generator and loading up on solar and maybe a wind turbine. Especially on a 50' catamaran.

Re: Some Numbers - Is Sailing Worth it?

Sailing is the most expensive way to travel for free.

If cheap is your goal, sailing shouldn't be on the list.

That said, I went from Key West to Hampton Roads on about 60 gallons of diesel. No...

Re: Your Lifepo4 just hit 80% depth of Discharge, how were you informed?

Victron BMS beeps. Loads continue to draw. I had to manually intervene.

Re: Battery bank sizing with Lithium

I guess I don't have the whole picture, but 12v100ah in 2S2P would only be 4800wh. At 3kw draw you've only got about an hour and a half of battery. What are you expecting to use this relatively small...

Re: Forced at gunpoint to jump off a sailboat in the Exumas

I don't think he has anything to do with Micro-Air.

Re: I have to move the mast again. But now it’s 64ft.

You're considering moving a 64' mast with your pickup truck but you don't have a vehicle to acquire lumber to build cradles?

What am I missing?

Re: Water cooled solar panels.

I wondered about doing this with fresh water on the input side of the water heater. Pop in some one-way valves and a circulation pump and extend your hot water capacity with the sun.

Re: What would YOU buy with US$300K ? US$500K ?

I like the look of Passports. Something a few years old fits that budget.

Bear in mind upgrade costs - even on a brand new boat.

Re: FL to VA, as much outside as possible?

I sailed outside from Key West to Portland Maine, with several trips back and forth between Fort Lauderdale and Norfolk area. Don't go when the weather is bad and you'll have a great time.

If...

Re: Opinions on Garmin wireless wind?

Yes, between the antenna and the transmitter. Also between the battery and the circuit board. Also between the solar panel and the circuit board.

Re: Question for Beamy Cat Owners (25ft+)

I don't think I would. I don't think it's necessary for me. But not because it's too wide - just that I don't need it. It's just my wife and I, and potentially a dog or cat the next time around. We...

Re: Question for Beamy Cat Owners (25ft+)

I owned an Orana for about 3.5 years on the east coast and into the Bahamas. It had a 25' beam and 64' mast. We went under a few 65' bridges on the ICW, but much preferred to sail on the ocean.

Re: Opinions on Garmin wireless wind?

As a systems administrator I would not use wireless for anything that is not require to move. Wires are always more reliable and require less maintenance. The weight of the wire up the mast is almost...

Re: Dinghy davits

I hoisted my Highfield 310 with 15hp motor attached. My davits were rated for 200 pounds each, and the dinghy+motor was about 215 pounds as I recall.

It would be worth checking all the specs on...
