Re: Need advice from corrosion experts

Not an expert, just chipping in re prop anode - is it corroding away, or just dropping off because the bolt holes have dissolved away? We had problems with ours, until we started painting antifouling...

Re: SOG of Fountain Pajot 47

We have an old, very heavy (15Tonnes) monohull with a ketch rig, but have recorded SOG of more than 17kts under sail on various occasions. Surfing (yes, even in our heavy old boat) and strong...

Re: Autoprop

We have an autoprop, and are fans. We've had the boat 8 years, and it was fitted by a previous owner.

For:
No propwalk in fwd or rev.
Power in reverse.
Self-adjusting, self-feathering.

Re: Intermittent loss of cooling

You could also check the heat exchanger. Ours coped fine when trundling around even when run for a while, but 'randomly' overheated with higher demand.

Re: Transporting a boat from Australia to Portugal

Ann

I'd agree with buying in Northern Europe if poss - although of course it depends what you are after, and your budget.

My reasons would be
1. Sun damage to non-med boats will be less.

Re: Wit's end with my outboard part 2

If you've had old fuel in any part of your outboard (and from your tale of woe I think you have) there will be a film of varnish-like fuel residue everywhere, especially round the carb and float...

Re: Searching for a family boat

It might be worth checking out the reports from recent ARCs to see what failures were reported under 'bluewater' conditions. Quite instructive.

FWIW I'd be prioritising keel and rudder design...

Re: Towing a Motor Boat

Another no.

We've got a heavy 42' sailboat.
Yes, we could tow you if we came across you in sheltered water, needing a short tow. Across the Atlantic? No.
The extra wear and tear on the yacht...

Re: Tips for cruising with a one-year-old?

My twopennyworth:

*By one years old, the infant will start to have some opinions about things;

*Carrying a one-year-old 'all the time' is not an option, and in anything other than calm...

Re: Dismasted at sea in the Bahamas, now what

We broke down in the Bahamas; another time, I would ROW if necessary to get anywhere else.
It will be quicker, cheaper, and less hair-tearing to not try and fix it in the Bahamas.

Re: AIS question for the experienced

Radar takes a lot more battery to run than AIS. When we have been offshore, we turn off everything except the AIS transmit.
Large boats will have seen you and taken any necessary avoidance action...

Re: Doubling Up Mooring Lines

Talk to other people at the Anchorage, and ask them what they do, and to critique your set up.
Sort out an anchor alarm.
Watch who breaks free under what conditions and work out why.
Learn how...

Re: Live aboard boat / Dog

Sorry, not intending to sound so negative, but:

Expect to train your dog

A) not to piss or sh*t on the pontoons in marinas, especially not the fresh water hoses;

B) not to bark at passing...

Re: West Coast Florida to Bahamas - Help with route

If anything is going to break, fix it before you get to the Bahamas. Their import arrangements for spares are off-the-scale vexatious. Amazon specifically excludes the Bahamas.

Re: How feasible The Bahamas for single hand?

We met several habitual single-handers in the Bahamas. As others have said, its easy sailing, and in good light you can see the depth and obstructions.

One tip - look for the "magenta line" on the...

Re: Dismasted by an aircraft carrier

Once upon a time, crossing the English Channel in snotty weather, similar to that described, we got a message on our AIS from a cross channel ferry.
It said:

"I cannot see you on my radar".

Re: Can I move my 38-foot boat with an outboard?

We've moved our 42' Moody, 15000kg, just pushing it with the rubber dinghy, fitted with a 6hp outboard. ' (Engine failure; sailed close to the marina, then 'towed' it.) Works ok; choose your weather,...

Re: Heading down the Spanish and Portuguese coast next year. Best anchorages?

we sailed from Ile de Yeux to Santander, and absolutely loved the northern coast of Spain. Yes, its potentially hostile; not many marinas, although lots of little fishing ports with a few visitor...

Re: Most Popular Wind Generators

As others have said - add more solar first, and perhaps consider a tow-gen if you intend travelling a lot.

We have solar, and a Marlec wind generator, fitted to our mizzen mast - it was all...

Re: Moody vs other higher end brands

We have a Moody 42 CC Ketch, built in 1978, and yes, we think its a great boat.
The centre cockpit is a great feature on any crossing where you are short-handed and/or at risk of any weather. Its...

You could talk to winchmate.com and see if they think one of their offerings might be man enough.
