Re: Long distance sailing in small yachts

Long distance sailing ins't cruising, luxury, or anything but sailing a long distance. Compound that with sailing in a small yacht. What's the difference between sailing a large vs small boat? It...

Re: Raymarine ST1000+ issue discovered

GILow, that certainly is within reason to say that keeping it out of the elements as best as possible isn't a bad idea. I was thinking of spraying it with a hydrophobic spray or possibly coating the...

Raymarine ST1000+ issue discovered

When I left out of Virginia headed for Pensacola the ST1000 seemed to have a mind of it's own. It would sometimes make a "Crazy Ivan" and other times it would seemingly reset. It was not a very...

Re: Beaten up ... need advice for sailing Florida panhandle

There wasn't much I could say about it other than we're sailing along (actually motoring) and there was a very loud boom that we felt the percussion from. As I scanned around, thinking we'd hit...

Re: Beaten up ... need advice for sailing Florida panhandle

I've sailed that stretch as recent as last June. The winds are out of the South in summer and the North in winter. The first week of December I sailed East for about 23 hours and with the light wind...

Re: YouTube sailing.

I jumped off the beam of my boat in the Carolinas in May and thought I was going to drown before I got to the ladder. The water was ice cold. Even in the winter the water is much warmer in Florida. I...

Re: Bad News for YouTube bloggers

Is it really much ado about nothing? I didn't originate the threat about the whopping $0.30 cents I've earned this year through YouTube. It's more about how even the guys who have no need to cut the...

Re: Lee Helm Scare

I was with you right up until you went forward to release the jib. That was a very dangerous risk as the sheet could have pulled you overboard and also beat the living snot out of you. If you were...

Re: Tackling long to do lists for boat fixes

These are all pretty good ideas. I really appreciate all of the input on how you go about doing things on your to do lists for the boat.

Yes, it sometimes seems overwhelming. I find that I keep...

Tackling long to do lists for boat fixes

So, I'm sitting down today and making this list of all of those things I have got to get done on the boat. Some simple and others will probably take me months to get to.

When you guys are doing...

Re: Anemometer not showing wind speed. Why does this keep happening to me?

They're telling you to trace the power from the instrument on the mast backwards, not the meter. It's possible the issue can be the sensor itself, or anywhere in between.

Have you reset the meter...

Re: Guess not all boat people are nice!

No, They're not all nice. However, I would venture to say that a great majority of them will risk life and limb to help you and save your boat. I can't begin to count the number of times people have...

Re: Bad News for YouTube bloggers

I noticed someone mentioned YouTube Red. When you're a Red subscriber you are automatically paying the ad placement when you view a channel. Interesting to note.

As for YouTube being part of...

Re: Bad News for YouTube bloggers

Yes, you've got that exactly right. They aren't losing anything by making the change. It's likely better to go back to the old style of advertising by placing ads directly into the videos. It just...

Re: Bad News for YouTube bloggers

Huh? Do you even know how YouTube works?

People can post their videos elsewhere, they're not the only game in town. Even this site generates revenue from ads. Vloggers upload content, if people...

Re: Bad News for YouTube bloggers

Let's see... Will no monetization on YouTube make your boat sink? I guess that really depends on if you were planning on using that revenue to buy a bilge pump or maybe fix a leak.

When I...

Re: Alternator good, not charging battery

The voltage drop across the diode should only be about .7 volts.

I may be way off here, but have you checked that the diode is conducting in only one direction? It seems awful small for the...

Re: Moody 39?

Moody's are from a 5 generation boat builder in England. Pre 1980 Moody is before Bill Dixon began designing them on his own. Angus Primrose built his first Moody 33 in 1972, this is when the Yachts...

Re: Missing Sailboat Miami

Florida law doesn't allow you to "Salvage" a boat just because it is adrift. There is a lot more to it than that and you would have to prove the expense that you used to recover it. Even then it...

I thought I'd share an interesting story of what happened as I sailed and motored down the East Coast of Florida.

That's probably the best bet down there. I'm not sure if the phones are working or manned there right now. Since it's not my personal boat and such they're likely not going to give much information....
