Re: Speed while motoring

Is it not just simply the previous owner doubled the power of the engine without changing the prop?

If the original prop got to the engine rated speed then doubling the power will have no effect,...

Re: Raising the Main Solo

Your problem is being able to steer upwind when standing up by the mast.

You can probably do this by running a line from each side of the tiller out through a stanchion or pushpit, up each side...

Re: Outboard HP for my Monohull

My vote also goes to renovating or renewing the inboard. Outboards are just a pain in the transom on anything but calm sunny days. :)

Re: Generator won't start

I was going to suggest trying it on ether just to confirm it is a fueling problem. But you say it won't start on ether. This implies the fueling could be fine and the problem lies elsewhere

Good...

Re: What boats have you owned?

Nice thread....

Heron dinghy; one design racing, great fun
Lysander 17' cruiser; used to sleep 5 on there, great fun and learnt a lot
Caprice 19' cruiser; a step up as it was not wood...

Re: Vetus diesel shakes at idle

Rubber engine mounts can get stiffer as they get older which means that the resonant speeds, shaking that is, move up into the engine idle range or higher.

They are laid out so that the resonant...

Re: Cell based lithium charging why not.

Sorry, :(

AxV = Watts which is power, and Watts x Time (seconds) = Joules, which is energy.

Re: Best knot for tying stern line to rocks when med mooring

Just a comment, which I hope doesn't derail the thread; I've never really understood the desire to back up to the rocks for an overnight stay unless there is a real shortage of space. You see boats...

Re: Why are flexible solar panels catching fire?

I am not an expert but as I understand it there is a major difference between domestic roof top type systems and 12/24 V marine systems. Basically most domestic systems consist of several panels...

Re: Cost per hour of running engine

Not sure why you would need to change the oil and filter after 50 hours. Most car engine specify around 20000 miles, say 600 hours conservatively. Little difference in the duty cycle.

+1 for starter fluid just to get it going

Good luck.

Re: Perkins no power under load

Most turbo diesels have a small pipe coming from the inlet manifold to measure the boost and allow more fueling. If this is split or leaking you don't get the extra fuel to produce the full power...

Re: Mast rake , can effect mast pumping??

What I meant was if the baby stay is tight enough to induce a bit of mast bend then the mast would not be free to move or rattle at mid height. Not in the dock anyway.

Pumping proper I think...

Re: Mast rake , can effect mast pumping??

My own two cents..

If you have a fractional rig with a babystay but in-line spreaders, not swept back spreaders, then you have nothing to stiffen up the mast bend which would be produced from the...

Re: Eagles CAN take off from the water!

Ok not eagles but where I live in Switzerland we have Buzzards and Kites, (wingspan 4.5 and 6 foot respectively).

One particular buzzard obviously had its nest and young in some nearby woods and...

Re: Volvo Penta md2020 exhaust 100% blocked with white gunk

Just my thoughts:

How far in did the white stuff go? Are the exhaust ports now clear right down to the valves?

If the white stuff got to the valves there is a good chance they are not seating...

Re: After tune up blues-update!

The valves would appear 'taller' due to valve and valve seat wear. If the valve clearances are not reset in time, or they are set too tight during an overhaul then it can become a vicious circle....

Re: Lead Crystal Batteries in Australia

Hi L and N,
do you have a 12V or a 24V system? Cos if its 24V you should not use 200 amps charging.

Re: Lead Crystal Batteries in Australia

StuM, I don't think you can forget how they were wired. If you say the 10h rate is 260 Ah that means they each need 52A. Each battery in series gets the same current so each bank also needs only 52A....

Re: Lead Crystal Batteries in Australia

I'm not an expert so someone please tell me I'm wrong.

It seems kind of counter-intuitive if you have a battery getting hot and expanding to then have to increase the charging current. I'd want to...

Re: Yanmar 2QM1. Head gasket leaking

I used to do calculations for these MLS gaskets, so some comments if I may which may help. The black coating is the gasket suppliers concoction of some sort of filled PTFE which rubs off the beads...

Re: Yanmar 2QM1. Head gasket leaking

The indentations (beads) in the gasket do the sealing around the water/oil passages. Each of these beads also has a coating for the micro sealing of the surface roughness, so I don't see any need or...

Re: Yanmar 2QM1. Head gasket leaking

Hi,

Nice job on the exhaust!

I agree the problem is not to re-analyse the failure, just to understand it.

When it comes to reassembly you could place the new gasket on the clean head and...
