Re: SIMPSON LAWRENCE 555 MANUAL WINDLASS

If anyone is still looking for the same windlass I have one for sale as well. Same thing, good working order, but no handle. That can be made simply from a piece of flat SS bar stock.

Email me for...

Re: Rust bubbles, penetrating epoxy, and acid etching of steel hull

I've been working on my 1978 Roberts Offshore 38 for the last few years. I got her sandblasted by a pretty useless company last year and they couldn't get through the original epoxy coating. In a few...

Re: Bad MacGyvering ! Questionable Funny Repairs

Sadly I have no photo of this, only of the repair I did to correct it, and that was pretty bad.

I was going to purchase a Grampian 26 up in Parry Sound Ontario, and hired a surveyor to look her...

Re: Starting a diesel that's been idle 10yr on prospective boat?

Just a couple of comments to add to this for things to look for when checking out old engines.

When I bought Sabre Dance, I had a mechanic come to look at the engine, and get it running. He used...

Re: Foam coring an old boat - insulation too

I am currently rebuilding my boat, and it was styrofoam sheets behind plywood. Having removed all that and looking at the abortion that the builders created with the frames by scabbing on bits of...

Re: Cuba to scrap two-currency system

I'll never forget my first trip to Cuba. Got in late because of problems with the baggage carousel, and got to the hotel after the dining room closed. We talked them into feeding us, and after the...

Re: What Is Your Most Memorable Mishap On A Boat?

Motoring down the Murray Canal towards Presqu'ile bay, dead into a 35kn wind. I go up on the foredeck to get the genoa ready to hoist when my girlfriend screams, "the boat wont turn!"

I look up to...

Re: Summer passes, sailing season too

Turn on the kero heater, turn up the radio for some rock n roll, and get on with rebuilding the boat. (been on the hard for 5 years now). Get dirty, tired and go home with a sense of accomplishment...

Re: Protecting Mild steel in the water

Amerlock 2/400. Blast the steel, or chip or sand or whatever, get rid of as much rust as you can, then paint with Amerlock. Stuff will cure down to -6C, and was developed to use on oil rigs, mid...

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

2226 and they blasted 3 horns and a lot of cheering. The thing is now vertical, actually leaning a tad over in the other direction but way down. Looks like they pulled the rabbit out of its hat after...

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Reuters has a good live feed. About 45 degrees at 7pm EST. I may have to eat my words, it's looking like they may pull this off.

Re: Cockpit Scuppers Size and Hose material

My cockpit scares the bejeebers out of me. I measure it, and calculated something like 64 cubic feet of water. I have two piddly 1.5 inch drains. I am currently investigating the possibility of...

Re: protecting the dink

I've been giving that some thought as I refit Sabre Dance. To that end I picked up a boom from a Grampian 26 which is about 11 feet long. I'm going to cobble up a fitting on my mast, and use my...

Re: Hard to reach bolts

You know, it's a real pity that the people who design these things never have to maintain them.

If I ever end up as King of the Universe, I think I'll implement a law that says the designer gets...

Re: Removing Zinc Anodes.

I came to that conclusion myself. Angle grinder with thin disks. Cut in parallel to the iron bar inside all around the end and then across. Chisel and a hammer and the zinc came off ok. Not fun stuff...

Removing Zinc Anodes.

A bit of a problem, they were put on with mild steel nuts over stainless bolts, and the nuts are almost round. Impossible to get at from the side as they are recessed into the anode, and I can't get...

Re: What are your Voyaging Hopes, Plans, Dreams or Vague Intentions for some day!

Move aboard and then try the Atlantic to Germany. Something I promised on my mum's grave in 1978. After that, some where where it doesn't snow.

AQUASIGNAL S40 TRIWHITE LIGHT

Have replaced this with a newer smaller unit that uses LEDs. About 30 years old but still serviceable. It broke while being removed by a hamfisted assistant, at the clear section but has been neatly...

Re: Renting Boat as Liveaboard

It can be done, but how to find one is the question. My brother spent last summer on a 31 foot Bayliner and was happy as a clam. Was paying $400 a month for it, but had to move out when they all came...

Re: How Big ( or Small ) Was Your First Liveaboard Boat ?

My first live aboard was a 1975 Grampian 26. I bought her while house sitting my parents place, and when they returned nonchalantly told them I was moving and gave them the address of the marina and...

Re: Rebuilding a Dream

One of my favorite tools for chasing electrical is a 30 foot piece of #12 wire with aligator clips at both ends. Clip one end onto the switch on the down stream side and then you can check continuity...
